Ok, so are alkenes, elimination, aromatic compounds, etc removed or not?

I've used the search feature already and have found several threads where people say these topics have been removed from the test since 2004 or even before that. And up until now, I believed it.

Then I take the o-chem portion of the AAMC self-assessment and it is littered with questions that require background knowledge on these topics (I'm talking hydroboration, oxymercuration, E1/E2, other electrophilic additions, etc).

So which is it? And if they have been omitted, why are they on the AAMC self-assessment?

AAMC Self-Assessments are just old MCAT exams combined. They may have material on them that is no longer tested.

Check out the AAMC topic list. If it's not there, you aren't expected to know the topic. You would be expected, however, to be able to work with the topic if it is adequately explained in a passage (i.e. if it gives you background on elimination, you are expected to be able to answer elimination questions).
