I hope it is okay to ask this question here.

I have a number of large boxes full of books from med school. They were used from 2003 through 2008 and include texts and review books. I need to sort through them and decide which are worth keeping. Is there any way for me to figure that out easily? Like a list of commonly used books and what their current edition is, or something like that? I don't want to get rid of books that I will find helpful in med school (hopefully starting next fall), but I don't have space to keep them all.

Thanks in advance.

Keep everything related to BRS, Rapid Review, and Netters.

Thanks

What about something like Lippincott's Review of Biochem, 2nd edition? That's an old edition, so is it not worth keeping?

I have all these textbooks too (not just review books, I mean). Money will be tight when I'm in school (obviously, it is for everybody, but I also have 3 kids) so I really don't want to throw away books that I'll be able to use. Should I just keep all of the ones that are the most recent editions and hope I can use them? It will take time going through them all (there are a lot) to see if they're old or new editions.

Some things are obviously keepers, like the brand new Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine. But most things are not so easy to tell.

lipponcot is good

also look for Robbin's pathology, keeper as well.

Yep, Definitely keep Robbins!! [Your friends will NOT tell you this but in this arena you want to be a "patho- physiology master"] {I know we are good paper pushers and book collectors}👍

Get a list of texts used by your school.
Keep all those, regardless of edition.

I'd keep all the review books.

ahh, seems obvious lol
thanks for this advice

I'll go try to find a book list, though I'm not sure I'll have access to one since I'm not a current student. I might see if I can find a current student who can get me one. 👍

Will the review books still be useful in old editions? I don't know how much the boards change from year to year (I have to assume that basic biochem doesn't change a huge amount lol)

Okay so I went through the book list and what I have but I still have a lot of questions. If anybody is willing to take the time to look through this book list I would be incredibly thankful.

Most of these just have completely different books on the book list. The ones I have were used for a different school. Some of them are older editions but I'm not sure if maybe they wouldn't still be useful.

Lippincott's Reviews Pharmacology 2nd Ed.
Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple Edition 3
Clinical Pharmacology Made Ridiculously Simple Edition 2
Color Atlas of Anatomy Fifth Edition by Rohen, Yokochi, Lutjen-Drecol
Netter Anatomy 3rd Edition (book list has 4th edition)
Deja Review USMLE Step 2
Bates' Guide to Physical Examination 8th Edition (book list has 10th edition)
Langman's Medical Embryology by Sadler 9th Edition
Lachman's Case Studies in Anatomy Fourth Edition by Cahill
Robbins Pathological Basis of Disease 7th Edition (book list has 8th edition)
Clinically Oriented Anatomy Fourth Edition by Moore and Dalley
The Human Brain Fifth Edition by Nolte

I have more books to go through still. Some of what I've gone through are obviously very old and not worth keeping. Others are 3rd and 4th year books and I just really have no clue.

Sorry if this is an annoying post. I just want to get through these boxes of books without throwing out useful books that could cost me $100+ dollars to buy myself.

For sure keep the Rohen Color Atlas. This is by far the most useful book I have purchased (and I purchased an old edition, so you're fine).

You have a lot of books from my booklist (Bates, COA, Langman's embryology), but 1-2 editions back. Considering how often we use the books (not very), I would say you're fine.

I would keep all of the ones in bold above... I mean come on, embryology and anatomy books don't really update much from year to year. Maybe the pictures get prettier but that's about it.

I would keep all of those listed. I'm not familiar with Nolte or Cahill but they could potentially be useful during your first year.

Changes from edition to edition in medical texts and review books are almost always minimal. It is how the publishers get each cohort of new med students to buy new books instead of used ones.

Thanks everybody.

I'm just really really short on space. I might have to go through all the books I have in my room and figure out which ones I can find room for in storage somewhere, to make room for more med books.

I agree with the others and would say to keep this book list if you can. The only book that I am not familiar with is Lachman's Case Studies in Anatomy, so you might want to inquire more about that book.

All of the other books are pretty good. The Nolte Human Brain book is used for the neuroscience/neuroanatomy course at my school and it is supposedly required, but I don't know how useful it is because we don't start neuroanatomy until after Christmas.

Anyway... just my 2 cents.

I bolded the ones that I think you should keep because I liked them. I'm not familiar with some of those, but the Netter and Robbins are a must (those editions should be fine). You've got a pretty decent stash, so I'd try to hang on to most of those.

In addition to those, I would also keep Color Atlas of Anatomy Fifth Edition by Rohen, Yokochi, Lutjen-Drecol, its very helpful, has pics of actual dissected cadavers.

I got Netter Anatomy 1st Edition as a gift from a friend. Do you guys think I can still use it to study or is it totally outdated (printed 1990) and should I get the latest edition?

Keep it. The anatomy hasn't changed

hmmmmmm...I wonder who this is!

If you went to Rice and graduated in 2004 then we were in the same class and it would make sense for you to either be a PGY-1 or 2 (depending on whether or not you took a year off)

Hey, my name is Nakul, I did indeed graduate from Rice in '04, Jones College. I graduated a year early, so I was likely a year below you. I am a PGY-2 now, in radiology. What are you up to?

hey guys
is there anywhere that I can find the list of changes between robbins 7th and 8th editions?

I dont think there's a whole lot-- but I d love it if they had a list-- its a pain to go back and forth since I only own the 7th as a book and the 8th as a pdf
