You could make a poll, "How long was your PS?" That might help you answer the question, because I have no idea.

But mine >5200

Quality, not quantity. Not that anyone is going to take a close look at it. I mean, what admissions committee is going to take the time to read thousands of 1-2 page personal statements?

Here is a separate question, when the adcoms view the PS, do they see the character count? Will somehow it be noticeable that it is shorter?

Do you want to turn something well-written and concise into a verbose pile of garbage for the purpose of appeasing character-counting *****s?

Don't ever change your PS because you feel that it should conform to a specific standard. If you're happy with it, leave it.

The difference between 4000 characters and 5300 characters is a short paragraph. I don't think they will even notice, let alone care. Most of the people reading your statement are scientists who like things to be concise and to the point.

Isn't it like 2 regular paragraphs? At least that's what word is telling me.

If you don't use all 5300 characters ADCOMS will view you as wasteful and ungrateful for the opportunity to expand upon your experiences.

But seriously, whatever you feel is the right length to convey your message/story is fine.
