okay, my PROF LOST MY LOR!!!!

I know he totally likes me, but he is the absent minded prof. I worked with him for 3 years in an IVF clinic and he is a physcian who also does research. HE is my ONLY physician that's writing me an LOR. I know he had written me one a long time ago, and he now's saying he lost it.

He wrote me another one thinking it's due sometime soon, and I just took a look at it...it'e 3 paragraphs long! He has asked me to update it as much as I want, add, subtract whatever I would like. I am nervous. I think I"ll have to start writing the whole thing myself.

What would I write? where do I start? What makes a good LOR from a physician that has seen me with patients for 3 years...I am so horrified. Also, if indeed I do write it, and he edits it a bit etc etc...what is the ethics code on reading our own LOR. I don't want AD COMs to look down on me b/c I have seen mine, so do I let the prof to LIE on the form about me not seeing it (not sure if that's good 🙁 ) , or do i actually not write it at all??? I absolutely need this LOR.

That sucks. . . but it *is* his fault and regardless of his absentmindedness, he should just suck it up and re-do it -- tell him nicely that this is completely critical to your app and that given the fact that he lost it, it seems only appropriate that he rectify the situation.

He didn't save it on a computer ??? 😕

Theres nothing unethical about seeing your recommendation if it is shown to you. Although, I know nothing about writing your own letter and having the guy sign it--though I guess thats ok too, since youre not forging the signature.

he had dictated the letter on his dictaphone, and said he would hand the tape over to the secretary. That was 6 months ago.

The tape is no where to be found. I don't think it ever got to her. 🙁
When and where do med school people ask you about having read your LOR? I hear they frown down upon you if you had a look into the LOR.

I sign something with my pre-med advisory committee that I am waiving my right to see my letters or something like that. That doesn't mean that if a prof wants to show me a letter, I can't look at it. Don't worry about seeing the letter.
Three paragraphs doesn't seem too short to me, as long as they are filled with good content. Maybe you could just add a few sentences to each paragraph or add some adjectives making you seem like a well qualified applicant?

I don't have a premed committee. Once he is done with the LOR, I will have him forward it to the dept at my Univ that holds confidential stuff.

I believe that there *is* a place where you/the prof write down if the student has seen the letter. I think I need to do a google search and learn how to write my own LOR. Gosh, I never thought I'd be in this situation.
