Yeah, that makes a big difference. If you apply as a non-resident, it's an uphill battle. And marrying an Okie is not enough.
 
Anyone that lives out of the state (but instate resident) get a letter after interviews Oct. 10? Cause i haven't.
 
Just out of curiosity, of the people who have acceptances already, who besides myself is absolutely certain they are going to OU, or is everyone planning on going somewhere else if they receive an acceptance from another school.

How far away are you? I suspect you'll get something today because mail generally takes no more than 3 days to get anywhere in the continental US. No guarantee, but that's usually right. :luck:

Is there any way to establish residency if you are a non-resident? Just curious - your discussion got me wondering if there are ways...I'd love to figure that one out. I married a former Okie, and all his family (ALL) live in OK, so those are my ties to the state. They are pretty tight. Love anyone's input on if I would EVER be able to establish residency...
My husband would transfer with his firm to the OKC branch - would that help?

I was truly excited. Can't imagine what a bummer my birthday would've been if I wasn't accepted, though. Wow, that would've sucked.

I got accepted 10/17, yay! I don't know if i'll go to OU or not but I'm excited about being a Dr. for sure!:hardy:

Just wondering...did you get guys get an email from OU saying that your application is complete and that they will let you know if you get an interview within the first two weeks of November??
 
no, and i've been complete there for at least a month. did you get one? 😕 hope this isn't something to be concerned about!
 
Well, that's good news than! I didn't get one, but one of my friends got one yesterday. It made me freak out for a bit, but I guess there's nothing to be worried about then since neither of us got one and both of our applications are complete. All it said was that interview dates will be decided within the first two weeks of November. If I hear anything else I'll let you know!

3 more days until Nov.1 ! anyone know when the admissions status page was last updated?

i never thought i'd be this neurotic! 🙂

They updated the page today, even though the date doesn't reflect it. They're up to just 1334 applicants and they've given 54 invites. Here's to hoping there's room for us in the remaining 106-ish spots 🙂
 
I heard that the class size is increasing this year...does anyone know anything about this? It would be good news if it were true!!
 
They told us it was 167 spots. I wouldn't get too caught up in subtracting the number of acceptances from the number of spots. They over accept so more people will get acceptances than there are available spots🙂

167! Sounds good to me! I just checked the update and 54/58 people who interviewed in October were accepted? Makes me wish I was in the group!! sigh

Agreed. I think those that get taken off the waitlist are reported in the total accepted. In the US News numbers from 2006

So if you are in-state your chances are pretty good. They said on their website that a typical class has 162 students but I think they said they were trying to make the classes as large as possible.

thanks for the info too kelbear! looks like if you get an interview your odds are pretty good. hope nothing is too different this year despite the new MCAT and all that jazz.

to all those who already interviewed/got in:
how did you guys prepare for interviews? i know it's on the interview feedback but i didn't know if you had any advice for those of us still waiting!
 
The interview feedback didn't help me. The questions I think everybody got varied a lot. My interview was very specific to my application where they asked about my culture, my family situation, stuff about IHS (I want to work with them), etc. But I heard some people got the more generic "Why do you want to be a doctor?" type questions. I think it will help to look up some stuff on ethical issues and what the interview feedback stuff says in case you do get an interview with those kind of questions. Definitely go over your amcas app. I had stuff they asked specifically about things I mentioned in my personal statement. I have a friend who was asked "What was [some random class] about?"
 
i liked the interview feedback. My interview was really relaxed and the docs were cool. One of my weirder questions was "why not get an mba and get rich?"

Ya, it's called Ultimate Guide to Medical Schools and is put out by US News and World Reports. It has stats like that for almost every MD/DO program in the country.

As far as the interview went, I posted my feedback from the 10/10 interview date. if you want to be prepared for tougher questions just know current issues and where you stand on them and why (malpractice, insurance, health care reform etc..). You should do fine, just don't get flustered. Most people had I spoke to had great interviews that just went over their applications but you might end up with the guy I had!

Oh, and a couple of people from my school spent a good amount of time talking about specific ethical situations so keep that in mind too. Seems to be little uniformity to the question.
 
I looked over my AMCAS, browsed the feedback, but for me, most importantly, I did a mock interview with my dad. (He does some interviewing for the technology center for a major oil company). He was able to point out my quirks and nervous habits that I couldn't pick up on by myself.
 
Although everyone said the interview would be really relaxed, i didnt quite buy it, and was pretty nervous when i walked in. Within 10 seconds i realized everyone was telling the truth because it was truly relaxed and conversational.

My first question was an ethical question, which was surprising, and the rest of the interview was spent chatting about random things, some related to my apps, some not.

I wasnt asked a single 'standard' question, but at the end they asked if i had anything to say, and i decided to go into why I chose "OU" etc.

I prepared with mock interviews, and going over the ethical questions. I asked friends to come up with stuff and randomly ask me during the week before the interview. it was helpful.

my interview was fine because I was ready for all the ethically questions they threw at me, but I was in the only room where the interviewers asked these kinds of questions. Every other room had nice interviewers. They do ask about your research and activities and look at your transcripts pretty thoroughly. Be aware. btw..don't be the person who at 8:15 AM asks the admin. all sorts of random, wanting-attention questions..hahaha I was to sit near one of those. oh yeah there is free breakfast and lunch.

Where can I find information on how to prepare for ethical questions? I have read over the principles of biomedical ethics and that's about it.

For instance, if they made you choose who to give the lung transplant (a healthy 80 year old man that doesn't smoke and exercises or a 25 year old smoker that will never quit)...would you necessarily choose a person or would it be best to give the pros and cons of choosing either person. I have a feeling it would be safe to not really answer directly and choose a person, but to weigh the odds of each person. What do you guys think? I really appreciate any advice on how to answer these questions!!
 
They want you to choose a person. There's no right answer, but they want to see that you can make a decision rationally. I got asked something along those lines, and it turned out fine (though we got into a friendly argument).
 
hahaha that was almost exact one of the questions they asked me...so whatever site you are using then study that..just be sincere and have some wisdom in your response..they kept telling there is no right answer cause I didn't want to pick one...but try this site

I don't think so. The class size went from 150 to 162 when I entered in 2006 (I think they raised the max to 167, actually, but it was 162 when the smoke cleared). The university is remodeling the Basic Sciences building to accomodate up to 200 - but they're re-doing the modules starting in January and I don't know how long it will take to complete. Currently, the lecture halls don't seat more than 170 (which only matters on test day and required attendance days!). I think it'll be at least another couple of years before the medical school considers raising class size again.

Gee, did an older student escort you to your interview? I kept telling my applicant group that there was only one doc who I knew of who really liked to grill applicants. When that particular doc was sitting there in a room when I dropped off "my" applicants, I felt terrible. I tried to force a smile and couldn't get out of there fast enough.

Most interviews at OU are pretty relaxed. As you've probably noticed from the acceptance statistics, they don't invite you to interview unless you've got an excellent chance of being accepted. It's fine to glance at a bioethics book if you want to, but that's really not the point. They just want to know if you can take a reasonable layman's position and defend it under a little pressure. There truly is no "right" answer. I was told by one of the OU interviewers that, while GPAs and MCATs are going up every year, the ability of applicants to look interviewers straight in the eye and to talk effectively is going down every year. They just want to see some communications skills and maybe a little personality.

My two absolute rules for interviews: 1. Know every word of your AMCAS - review it one more time the night before. If there's something in your AMCAS and you can't remember it, you look awfully foolish. 2. Don't ever bluff anything - they can smell that a mile away, and it can easily be fatal. My interviewer asked me what the latest non-medical book I had read was, and I told them. Turned out the interviewer had read it too, and we had an interesting discussion. Had I not actually read the book all the way through, I would have been nailed.

That kinda stinks. They specifically said on my interview day that they were raising the number of acceptances to 167. No one said that it was a raise of five seats.
 
I actually hope they don't try to do a 4-year program in Tulsa - not unless they get some agreement for the guest-lecturer professors to commute up. Don't get me wrong - I love Tulsa, I still own my house there, and I'm looking forward to going back for MS-III/IV. But, the truth is, the research goes on in Oklahoma City. I was very impressed when I finally realized that a lot of our instructors in the pre-clinical years are world-class researchers who are widely known for their particular field of expertise. Unfortunately, not much bench research goes on in Tulsa. I think being exposed to those researcher-instructors is part of what makes us a good school - I'd hate to lose that.

Ah, you'll get in. And, until the remodeling is finished, you need to be more concerned about the number of toilet seats than auditorium seats. The Basic Sciences Education Building was built in 1970 when medical school classes were about 10% female. You'll notice this fact when you're looking for a restroom. (Sorry, tacky - I know, but I had to throw that in!)

Are they fixing the bathroom situation with the remodeling? I missed the last meeting about it and have only heard about the mod changes. Yep, that's an improvement that needs to be made. Another reason to be a homeschooler. 🙂

still haven't heard anything on my end, i guess they have to wade to the bottom of the priority list before i hear anything 🙄 is it just me or are they moving kinda slow this year? i thought people had interviews by mid november this time last year!

Does anyone know what the interview dates are for November? I just know of the 27th and the 29th...is there also one on the 28th?
