Anyone who knows - I volunteer at Children's and thought I'd just walk my photos over instead of mailing them. Is the admissions office in the BSEB or another building?

I believe they're in the medical sciences building (can't think of its exact name) -- all the admin people are there. It's connected to the BSEB by a walkway on the second floor. The admissions people are probably on the 3rd floor.

Thanks! Well, the admissions office is on the 3rd floor of the BMSB (which is the big tall building with OU medicine on it). BUT when I took my check over for the secondary application it was in a tiny room in the basement of the BSEB. I would go to the BMSB first.
This may be a dumb question but do you have to take your actual passport photos over there or just get "passport photos" made? My passport is about 8 years old and I look nothing like I do now!

They just want small photos that they can attach to your application so your interviewers can recognize you when discussing you. So just get passport photos made. If you have any recent wallet size photos, you could probably send that, too.

Unfortunately, I received a manila envelope whose contents told me that "final action on your application has been deferred." Can anyone with experience tell me what this really means? I felt like my numbers were reasonably strong:

3.98 GPA (undergrad major: geology)
3.4 graduate GPA (not completed// I was taking quite a few premed classes including OChem)
31 MCAT 10 10 11V

Medical Experience:Volunteer work at a local ICU (60 hrs) - This is probably where I fell short against most applicants. Changing majors and trying to rack up clinical experience is hard to do in 1 year.

Do they accept people from the deferred list or am I basically just waitlisted? I just don't want to spend several more months eagerly checking my mail for an acceptance letter if it probably won't come.

I'm sorry you got the manila envelope. 🙁 Normally what that means is they won't make a final decision on your application until their last meeting in February or March (I'm not sure when it'll be this year). I'm not sure how the numbers work out officially, but from reading SDN, it seems like most of the applicants on hold do wind up on the waitlist, which I know isn't what you wanted to hear.

However, getting an acceptance after that last meeting is indeed a possibility. I've never heard of anybody getting a rejection after that meeting, so the worst case scenario is being waitlisted. And even then, it's not too bad of a place to be because OU accepts lots of people off the waitlist.

I've got to admit I'm puzzled too by you not getting the red envelope. If your BCPM significantly lower than your total gpa? If you're planning on not completing the grad degree, that might also be a red flag.

They accept a lot of people from the waitlist. They only give 300 interviews, so if you've got an interview that means that you are academically qualified to be in med school. They have to fill 162 spots, but a lot of the people who are initially selected by OU are also accepted elsewhere, and many of them choose to attend another school.

You had one of the first round of interviews, so that is definitely a good sign when they review down the line. I have a friend who was initially deferred, but then got accepted in March. The frustrating part will be waiting until March. There is still quite a lot of hope...don't worry!

I might have gotten the initials wrong (been a few years since I applied). It's your math and science gpa. If you look at your AMCAS, they should have it listed.

My advice would be to keep up with volunteering and send them updates on that. If you're not accepted by later in the spring, they'll give you specific information about what you could do to strengthen your application.

Honestly, I don't think choking up at the interview is a bad thing. If anything, it shows sincerity.

Without getting into a tireless DO vs MD discussion, I am just wondering how you all think I should answer this. I'm not trying to come up with a lie or anything, I just don't know how I should go about answering this question. Any ideas?

I think that would be a totally fine answer. It shows that you're committed to being a doctor. From what I've heard, it's not entirely too uncommon for interviewers to ask people if they applied to OSU, and if not, why.

I was asked about my plan B, to which I replied I was already accepted to another medical school [osucom, but didn't tell them]. They asked if I would choose OU. Right now, I'm actually 70% or so toward OSUCOM, but I just replied that OU offers me the chance to stay near family and friends who are very important in my life. Technically OSUCOM does as well, and they were satisfied with the answer.

Anyway, one interviewer told me "I was already in" at the end of the interviewer. Needless to say, I got the red envelope yesterday, and now have a choice to make regarding which state school. (But I'm still waiting on my east coast schools to get back with me 😉 )

Keep you head up and keep trying!! Just remember that there is always a lot of movement on the list!! I think that updating your information will definitely help especially since you are in grad school right now! Unfortunately, I don't know a physician in those areas for you to shadow. You can get some good experience at Health For Friends in Norman. A lot of my friends volunteered there, but you may have to check because they usually have an abundance of volunteers. Good luck and let us know if you hear anything! 🙂

This is a question for those who did their undergrad at a seperate university other than OU.

I am a student at Southwestern OK State and was doing the pharmacy thing, but after shadowing some doctors I found my true passion. This was last summer.

I switched majors this last fall semester and will complete all listed required pre-reqs next fall. I'll also be 20 hours from my Bachelors allowing me to finish my bachelors over the summer before I hopefully get admitted to OU.

Now my question, a few people at my school are saying that OU requires us to take some of their pre-reqs that arnt listed on their admissions page (other than the chems, bios, upper levels, physics, and the 3 humanities courses) such as art history and non-western history which would force me to take an overload the spring before medical school which i would really despise.

Can anyone enlighten me on this?

To begin with, I have not taken any classes at OU.

Directly from the pre-req course checksheet that must be turned it at your interview, you need:

Gen Zoology/Biology w/ lab
Gen Chem 1 and 2
O. Chem 1 and 2
Physics 1 and 2
One of the following: Histo, Comparative Anatomy, Cell Bio, Embryo, or Genetics
3 Semesters English (Comp 1 and 2, then an upper div lit is what I took)
Three Semesters out of the following: Philosophy, Humanities, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, or Foreign Language

No, they don't have any secret pre-reqs that only people at OU know about. They are very straight forward and upfront. They prefer you to have a degree in something, but they state that as well.

Yeah, from my experience they're pretty flexible with the English requirements. Generally 2 plus something writing based works. Getting to your question about the weird prereqs, I don't know of any, and I didn't go to OU for ugrad either. 🙂 I hope those other students have fun taking Western Civ. 😱

If you've made the decision to come here, it is a good one. I haven't had the opportunity to read over this entire thread, but if any of you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them for you.

I am a fourth year student who is currently in the middle of interviews for Radiology. I might have a different perspective than the other first and second year students that could be of interest to you. It is nice to be near the other end of medical school, and I might have some helpful insight into residency application, third and fourth year rotations, etc.

Where can I find information on how to prepare for ethical questions? I have read over the principles of biomedical ethics and that's about it.

For instance, if they made you choose who to give the lung transplant (a healthy 80 year old man that doesn't smoke and exercises or a 25 year old smoker that will never quit)...would you necessarily choose a person or would it be best to give the pros and cons of choosing either person. I have a feeling it would be safe to not really answer directly and choose a person, but to weigh the odds of each person. What do you guys think? I really appreciate any advice on how to answer these questions!!

They generally pose ethical questions like this, wait for your answer, and then they will argue for whatever side you are against. They want to see if you can come to a choice rationally and can articulate your reasonings. The only "ethical" question this does not apply to (according to an adcom member) is "If you catch a classmate cheating on exam, what do you do?" There is a correct answer, and it is to turn them in (doesn't matter how, just that you do).

I didn't know you decided on radiology. As a radiology hopeful for next year do you have any advice to offer now that interview season is drawing to a close? How many places did you end up applying to? I'm pretty sure your stats are a little better than mine. 😉 Feel free to PM me!
