Just wondering who all has applied to Oklahoma State and how you are feeling about it. This is my second time applying, last year I got wait listed so I am hoping this year I will get in. I should at least get an interview I think. Doing this the second time is almost more nerve wracking than the first.

This is even worse than the 2nd. I hope there's no fourth for me. First year, I was waitlisted, last year, flat out rejected. As an OOS, I won't hear to the end of March. long wait...

Hey all I'm part of the OKSU hopeful crew this year 😀

Hopefully my app is still in the running, they phoned me on the 15th to say that they hadn't gotten my fall transcripts yet and if they didn't have something by the end of the day my app would be thrown out.... (my schools were really obnoxious about my fall transcripts and didn't even release the grades until the 14th, UGH)

...$50 later I had gotten a rush copy of one transcript, printed the unofficial grade report from the other off of the 'net, and faxed them in, but have been too busy to call them to find out if it all worked out okay!! They did say that the unofficials were fine with them as long as they arrived ON the 15th so I'm hoping I'm cool... I guess I'll check in w/them later this week.

Third time? I cannot even imagine. I have however told myself that I will keep trying until I get in. I may have to get another career while I wait, but I know this is what I really want to do, in the end they may just get tired of seeing my applications and let me in. I hope we all get in. :xf:

I did UGA too. I looked at the stats of the OOS students accepted too last year for OK, and I exceeded some of them and still didn't get in. Who knows.

I've also applied to OkSU. It's my first time and the only school I applied to. I totally agree about how little info they have about the process. It's aggravating!
If I don't get in this cycle I think I'll cast my net a little wider. (I really freaking hope I get in this time though) I don't want to have to go out of state. We just bought a house in Tulsa. That'll be a long commute but, it's way better than moving.
"MARCH"? Is that when they interveiw? or Accept? Does anyone know when they'll start sending out interview invites?
(worry worry worry...argh)

I got my invite end of Jan./early Feb. last year so, anytime now! Interviews for ISers were end of February. Sorry, OOSers, you just have to wait a million years. 🙂

2 seats for DE, and something more like 10 for NJ residents... I'm not sure the process, exactly, but I do know that it's largely a numbers game. GPA and GRE scores factor in first, and they DO factor the writing section as part of the score... I think they consider a 4.0 a 400, a 4.5 a 450 etc. or something like that. Then your total file review gets a number score based on a system that all reviewers follow - things to look for in each section, and a total number of points available to give in each section. Then they just add it all up and if you aren't in the top however many... tough cookie.

Edit: Of course there is a personal aspect to everything so it's not as systematic as it sounds... real live people read your PS and two people can have very different takes on the same PS, so while it's mostly about writing a good PS, there's always a little luck involved. The same is true for everyone, and in many other aspects of life as well. Just pointing that out...

That is, in my best knowledge, how they go through the applications. For ISers, there is an interview score as well. The rest is mostly the same.

Let me know if you guys need any local info when the time comes to interview, visit, or... move! 🙂

Thanks Twelvetigers, that's great to know. It does make me slightly more anxious thinking that it could come any day but, really everything seems to make me more anxious now.
The Vets I know say "Oh, you'll get in..blah blah...don"t worry" but CRAP I'm worried I won't even get an interview! Won't that be an awkward conversation at work when I yell, "YOU SAID I WOULD GET IN!!" then throw something, cry and run way.
At least I have great people skills 😉

BTW, how did they contact you about your interview?

A letter in the 'ol mailbox. No emails for anything I've gotten (that's an interview, and a rejection, lol). I think acceptances are sent in normal mail too. Old fashioned! No phone either, except one girl that got off waitlist... but she was out of state long-term for family illness reasons so it may have just been the admissions lady being nice to this girl given her circumstances.

Twelvetigers or anyone who's already had an interview (W/OkSU), what was your interview like? Do you have any OkSU specific interview advice? I hope I'm not being too nosey. I'm just super nervous and want all of the advice I can get.

Everyone is interviewed by a different group, but I am pretty sure most of them will happen the same way. My interview went very well and once you get in, you will realize it is not so scary. You will be asked questions about your academics, maybe why you didn't do so well in a class or why you did very well in a class. Also you will be asked questions pertaining to the field of veterinary medicine, not necessarily questions that are right or wrong; just ones that you have an opinion about. Make sure you know what a vet does, what kind of things you will be expected to do in vet school, and know what big issues the veterinary community is facing now. They also have random questions on notecards that you have to pick and talk about. Good Luck!

I thought they were "blind" interviews at OkSU. One of my LoR's said when she was interviewed she said something about how bad she did in physics and they were like "Whoa we can't see your grades." Has it changed? Because I'm cool with that but I just want to be prepared.

And Biomajir, Thanks for the advice 🙂

They are blind interviews. So, if you don't talk about your academic troubles in your PS or explanation, they won't know about it and won't ask. So don't bring up crappy grades, GRE scores, or any of that. They only see your VMCAS stuff - experience and PS, that business.

They have a set of like five laminated papers on the table - you turn one over and talk about whatever it says. It's either a standard question (animal rights vs. animal welfare) or something horribly random (Winston Churchill once said that the outside of a man is like the inside of a horse - what do you think?) so... just uh, go with it. Lol. The other questions are about yourself, your experiences that you've mentioned in your app., and some current events and issues.

Don't fret - everyone is really nice. 🙂

Cool, that's awesome to know...hmmmm, now I guess I just have to keep waiting... better than OOS though (March...lame).
Also, I heard schools want you to have "hobbies." That sounds a little counter intuitive...Is that what you all have heard?

I guess it could be a positive thing to have other interests beside just vet med and the things it entails. You could put writing, sports, card games... I don't have any great examples. I'll probably mention that I play the french horn. Not having anything in that section probably isn't a big deal though.

Yeah, that was just something our latest preceptor mentioned. Anyway, I would probably have too many instead of not enough. Just seemed odd and I wanted to run it passed you guys.

Do any OOSers know when we are supposed to hear something??

Hey, guys, quick question. When you took the Bio GRE, did you have the scores directly sent to OKSU? I think I'm taking it in April, and that seems a little early to have them forwarded. Is that normally how it works or should I wait until this fall to have them sent?

Well, I took it in November, so it's hard to say. You can go ahead and send them, but you might email Katrina or Robin to let them know to keep an eye out for them, or to get your file started.

Got my OK rejection letter today.. Dont know why it took so long to get here. Dated Jan 30th. Something about pre-reqs being to old. Which is total :bullcrap:because I had all my courses verified before I even applied. Guess I will try and make a phone call but dont expect anything to change. Welp, another application year wasted!

That's lame, I'm sorry. I hope they realize their mistake.

"The quantitative data on all of our applicants has been done and the admissions committee is now doing the subjective scoring. We do not interview nonresident applicants, so it is a bit before you will hear from us again. We will send our letters out sometime during the week of March 16-20th."
Quick Update for everyone 🙂

Well I had my interview yesterday and it went okay...I hardly got any sleep the night before because my son is ill and was admitted to the children's hospital Thursday night due to high fevers with an unknown cause...so after two hours of sleep I drove to Stillwater and did as well as I could. It seemed to go okay though and the tour was really cool. they passed out a flier after the interview saying that they will mail out decisions from March 9-13th...GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!:luck: :xf:

I'm an Oklahoma resident but I go to OU (boomer sooner!)

I'll be applying this fall, and oklahoma state is my highest hope

I have a great GPA (3.95) and I'm an excellent test taker (32 on ACT... I'm taking the GRE in a few weeks but I'm not too worried)

My only worry is vet experience. I was pre-med for a year which has killed my experience hours cause I volunteered at a hospital instead. so I have a few questions for you guys

1. should I mention that I was pre-med? will that help or hurt me?
2. I've been volunteering at a spay/neuter clinic... is it important that I diversify what animals I've worked with? Because my number of hours is maybe only 200-300
3. I've heard OSU doesn't like OU grads.... true??

Hey, welcome to the boards!

I'll be applying this fall as well... perhaps I should give bad information... 😏

Haha. I wouldn't!

1. You could but be prepared to explain in detail WHY you decided to pursue vet med instead. And, the only place to really mention it specifically is in your personal statement, so you might think about how you'd work that in... but the interview people would notice that you worked at a hospital and may ask about it, so be ready to explain either way. If you don't mention it in your PS, you'll probably still be okay. Just keep working on the experience now. If you come in with over 500 hours plus a GPA like that and good/great GRE scores, I think you'll still be in good shape.

I also would like to mention, slightly off topic, that if you are ONLY applying to OKSU, you don't have to use VMCAS! I'm glad I did because now, for my second go round, I know what to expect (and I'm applying to several places). BUT, you can save money if you're only interested in OKSU. They have some other way to apply. You would need to contact the admissions ladies for more info, though. I see that you said "highest hope" so this may not apply to you, but i just wanted to get the info out here while I was thinking of it.

2. A little large animal experience never hurt anyone! If you could manage a bit of diversity there, I would recommend it. However, with a GPA like that and a good GRE, you might be okay anyway. So, don't freak out about it, but try and find a place to shadow or volunteer just in case.

3. No, no, no. While there is a bit of rivalry there, obviously, OKSU folks are going to recognize that OU is a great school that has a great education system. No on is going to pick or not pick you based on the color of jersey your football team wears.

Good luck, and don't forget to study for the GRE, good test-taker or not. There's also the biology GRE to take, and that's a bit harder to study for (more material, but things you should have learned already) so don't forget about it. They only do those in April, October, and November, so you have a while before you have to worry about that.

Let us know if you have any more questions. 🙂

Hey Everyone! March is here! Decision letters go out next week! From what Ive seen online I really like Oklahoma, but didnt get to tour the facilities because OOSers dont interview (was going to tour the school on my drive through OK in January, but I hit a snow storm so I had to cancel to get to my Iowa interview on time).. For all you ISers who interviewed could I have your feedback about what you got about the program and facilities while you were there? Did you meet any students/what was their opinion of the school? What did you like/dislike? Im super interested in the new Parasitology Center. Did you hear anything about that? Thanks Guys!!! :-D

Hey... I worked in one section of the vet school for two summers and then worked in the teaching hospital part for two years, so I can offer some feedback on facilities. I can also possibly answer some specific questions about the program, but obviously can't give any personal opinions. If you have any questions for current students, I know at least one person in each class...

If you're interested in any of this info, just PM me.

Also, I know they're completely renovating OADDL (the diagnostic lab) but I hadn't heard anything about parasitology in particular... perhaps it's a part of that renovation? I haven't seen the new parts of the building yet, but I bet it's nice. They're also installing a digester... YUM. Guess it's a handy thing to have, but I'm not sure I want anything to do with it. 😉

Awesome!!
I am so anxious to hear back!
I heard the teaching hospital was on quasi-lock down because of the Pickens thing. Is that just a rumor?

Nope. Went to Antech today with some slides for clin path (dog has lymphoma 🙁) and I hat to park up front and go through the front door! Hah. A valid student ID is required to get in through any other door, and the other buildings are the same... except there isn't an entrance for clients, so...

I guess it's a bit crazy. 🙄

That's such a bummer. 🙁

Is that going to impact open house?

Bump.

Someone said letters would most likely go out March 9th-13th. Any news anyone???

I am a Delaware resident and i just received my acceptance letter in the mail, it was dated the 9th of March. Hope this helps!

I'm sure they'll have all the doors open for you guys at open house.

Let me know if any of you need some help finding your way around, and if you do decide to come here I still have that apartment list from last year, and I'm still up for playing tour guide for a day so you can learn your way around. Just PM me whenever through the summer.

I don't think they're done yet because I know a couple of locals who should by all means be hearing some good news and nothing so far. So don't fret just yet!

I was placed as an alternate with records that "compare "favorably" with those of students being offered addmission" and "impressive credentials"... not really sure what that means.. Anyone know how many go through the alternate list?? I am OOS/non contract. Should I assume this is good news?

who knows- it depends on the year. I was waitlisted as an OOS 2 years ago, and the letter said I was favorable too, but the list didn't move far enough. I hope it does for you!!!! Good luck!:luck:

Still waiting on my letter, I am getting so nervous. I wonder why it is taking so long. I know people who live in OKC that have gotten their letters so not sure where mine is. Guess I will wait until Monday. The waiting is the absolute worst! Hope I get good news! :xf:
