I had a question. How long are medschool prereqs valid? I took mine more than 10 years ago would they still be valid or would I have to retake them to apply to med schools? would MD/DO schools be the same in this regard?

This is a school-specific question. Some schools don't care about the age of your prerequs especially if you have more recent coursework. Some schools do have an age on coursework but most don't. Call the schools that you anticipate applying to and find out. You might even send an e-mail for this info too.

Even if you did complete all your pre-requisites 10 years ago, I would still recommend that you sign up to take some upper level science classes. Medical schools prefer to see that you haven't forgotten the old material and that you can still do well in current classes. Besides that, the upper level classes can serve as a refresher course and make it easier when you transition into full-time studying mode when you're in medical school

Thanks for your replies. I do have recent coursework, but in a different field. I am finishing up a PhD from an Ivy in the humanities. While I loved my dissertation topic, I don't want to go any further in the field. My mind is too practical at the end of the day. I've been thinking about medicine for a few years, but finding time to retake courses while working full time is not easy. If my prereqs are still accepted by some schools (I had a 3.65 in Biochem), well I'll study for the MCATs, volunteer, and hope for the best. Medicine might just have to be a dream I let go of.
