I had a friend that was going to practice out there and he did some research on it and he found that the avg. income was WAY lower than in the 48 states. I think it was somewhere in the 80k region. Thats not worth the headache in my book!

Damn...$80k. Thats 50% less than what the ADA is saying for a national avg.

I have a family friend that practices in Hawaii. He does more than fine running his own practice. There are a few caveats though. He says that Native Islanders do tend to prefer to use the offices of other Native Islanders. He also said that if he had it to do all over again, he would open up shop on another island than Oahu ... he specifically mentioned Maui or Kauai. I've been to Kauai ... it is the most georgeous place that I have ever visited ... my wife and I found ourselves looking for jobs cleaning rooms and digging ditches trying to stay there.

How hard are the Hawaii board exams????

Make sure the graders find a huge $100's behind your preps 😀

Isn't the cost of living in HI like much greater than the mainland?

Also, if you think that California is saturated with PPOs and HMOs, wait until you practice in Hawaii.

i was on kauai last summer and asked around about dental opportunities on the island. kauai only has a few dentists, and there are some specialties that don't even exist on the island. for example, if an islander needs an oral surgeon, they have to fly to oahu or maui. so the need is pretty high, at least on kauai. i don't know what pay on that specific island is like, but it was the most amazing place i've ever been and i might consider a little less money to live there.

Boards: About as hard as California's but the pass rate is lower and they are only offered 2x per year.

Job Opportunities: Not so good for GP's at all unless you are from there and have a big family OR if you are willing to work on a neighbor island.

Salary: Low (low!) compared to cost of living. You better really want to live there to move there! Better for specialists.

Happy to answer any more questions if anybody wants to contact me. My husband is a GP out there and I'll be taking my boards this summer and (hopefully) working as a specialist.
😀

Sorry for the late reply guys. I had a Physio test today...thank god it's Friday 👍 Anyways, thanks for all the great tips. Yah, I've heard that the cost of living is high and that locals have a better chance of making it there but I'm 2nd gen Japanese and speak fluently so I thought maybe I could blend in. I did not know that the boards were so damn difficult though. It's a hard choice. I want to go GP but I initially want to make good money for the kids future so maybe somewhere else maybe a better choice (I'm from So. Cal originally). Maybe I can retire there or go there after a few years 😀 Plus, I don't know how much motivation I'd have if I lived in such a beautiful environment. Oh well...it was worth a shot.

Don't be discouraged! The ability to speak Japanese will totally help you out. All the kids speak english but a lot of the adults don't and would prefer a DR> who speaks their language.
Go for it!

Just wondering if anybody here currently is, planning on, or knows anybody that pratices in Hawaii. Reason being, my fiance is originally from there and that is one of our options once I get done with school. Just basic questions like how saturated the market is there (most likely Oahu), what boards they participate in, how to obtain a license, how well dentists survive there, etc. Anything that would be helpful will be highly appreciated. Also, just for my own curiousity, why don't they have a dental school there? Mahalo.

Hawaii passed SB568
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/7950248/

They will offer licensure by credential for specialists and accept regional exams from 2004 and 2005, but ONLY if they don't create a whole new exam by July 15th and offer 2 exams by December.
If you are at all interested in working here, PLEASE contact me...
we need help and the more dentist on board, the better.
e-mail me ASAP- [email protected]
:luck:

Isn't there a plan in the works to get a dental school there? A faculty member at our school is being recruited for a possible job. Don't know how serious these talks are though. Anyone heard anything???

Thanks for the update. Although I have two more years before I graduate, I would be more than happy to help you as we are seriously considering moving there. My wife(yes we finally got married, in Oahu none the less 👍 ) and I have been seriously looking into cost of living in Hawaii and although it is expensive for a tiny island (no offense), it is still very reasonable compared to other expensive cities such as Los Angeles, San Fran, or New York. BTW, where did you and your husband go to highschool?

UNLVDMD-You've heard correct. Apparently, Hawaii was listed on AADSAS and on the ADA website if that's any indication. However, there are unaccredited, their website is not up and they aren't returning emails so it seems it's at a very primitive stage (I can't see how they are going to open before the next application cycle). But at least all this (school and new legislation) seems to indicate that Hawaii is serious about making some drastic changes in the delivery of dental services in that state.

Cool- I'll e-mail you personally.
You'll love it here!
😀

Yes, there is currently a dental school being built in Kapolei (west side suburbs)
It's being privately funded, so not necessarily supported by the state or Hawaii Dental Board. Most dentists here are clueless about it.
I think it's great. The lower income people really need the help. :scared:

Cool! Dental school in hawaii isn't too shabby. 😎 The only Hawaiian I ever knew that talked about her dental problems was a lady who was missing 7,8,9, and i think 12. She was missing these cause she had pain in them and PULLED THEM OUT HERSELF WITH PLYERS!!!!!!!!! 😱

Please view the pharmacy forum under HICP students, etc.
The same owners that own Hawaii College of Pharmacy are trying to start a dental school in Hawaii for 2006.
But I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND IT TO MY WORST ENEMY.
Please read the thread on HICP under Pharmacy students and you will know why.
Also, do to the fraudulent and unethical activity that has occurred with HICP you don't want to get involved with this dental school in Hawaii. 👎

This Dental school in Kapolei has nothing great about it. I would know-I'm in Kapolei and have first hand experience with the current Pharmacy school HICP.
The owner's are nothing less than scammers, crooks, unethical and immoral business people. They see the need for these schools and are only in it for the money, not to be educators.
Please view the Pharmacy forum and go to current PharmD students and read the HICP thread. There you will find the TRUTH about this dental school and the current Pharmacy school in Kapolei Hawaii. David Monroe and Denise Criswell are the owners of these schools and the Dental school is following the similar path as the pharmacy school.
Please don't allow yourself to be scammed and robbed of $30,000 + year.

Stay away with ANYTHING RELATED TO HAWAI COLLEGE OF DENTAL MEDICINE, OR HAWAII COLLEGE OF PHARMACY, OR PACIFIC BLUE UNIVERSITY. Don't make the same mistake as HICP students.
Read the HICP PharmD. thread and you WILL know WHY.

However, I'm going to refrain from bashing this school based solely on the pharm school. Every new school is going to run into their share of problems (some more than others). If the owners of the pharm school have half a brain, they will learn from their mistakes and not repeat them with the dental school.

The problems with the group that owns the Hawaii school are more than simple problems associated with a new school.

The owners are obviously not worried about achieving accreditation for their Pharm school.
