do imgs who do phd before applying for residency suffer as a long time (4-5 yrs) has passed after they graduated medical school

the several people I knew who were IMG's and did PhD had no problems. They actually had a heads up on the research component of their residency and got several pubs out before graduating to practice.

I know several got jobs in Northern Cali while the remainder either took research (predominant) positions or joined faculty at their institution.

thanks for the answer. i have another question, does the subject of your phd limits you to your choice of residency in some way.

I don't know about that... I would have to guess that if you are good with bench work and know your techniques, that should be enough of a boost.
