Like most of the peeps on this board, I am poh, so I don't currently have the money to buy the new Robbins. I'd like to read before beginning residency but don't want to waste time on the old version if it's not relevant anymore. I can't imagine the new version is radically changed; what do you think?

Who told you to read Robbins b4 residency?

Dont, read Rosai and Ackerman, focus on the bold print and the pictures.

I was going to read Robbins because it's the only general Path text I have. I likewise am too poh to buy Rosai and Ackerman.

.....One word: LIBRARY. I never bought 1 single book in residency. They are a total waste as most trade books become obsolete in 5 years anyway.

Go to your med library and make a request to purchase Rosai if they dont got it.

...Oh perhaps a used/less recent version of Rosai/Ackerman. Def. agree with LADoc00 that you'd want Rosai, if anything, for residency general surg path.

If that were a practical option, I would do it, but it's not. More practical would be to own a textbook to read at my leisure. I do understand where you're coming from about which book to read, however. I'll see what bargains I may be able to find on ebay.

I think the old Robbins should still be useful. Probably not all that much has changed between editions. Any new stuff you will probably run across in one of the heavier, more detailed pathology texts. I think for now, reviewing the important points and basic histology pics might be the prudent thing to do. There's no point in going overboard before residency anyway, IMHO.

Nah, true. You could just become scared looking at those huge books. Still, I think Rosai belongs in any path office/cubicle/blood-stained autopsy table (... ok, scratch the last one). It's probably the best all-round book around. And since there's just a new version out, I'd recommend buying it, unless your credit card is totally maxed out. Heck, you spent much more criscrossing the country for inane interviews...

we find things every now and then that are different in the new robbins. i think the biggest one so far has been the chapter on neoplasia and i think some immunopath. and i really dont' know but it would seem to me that neoplsai is a big deal and i think that this was updated not in just the general chapter on neoplasia but neoplasia in each organ system also. but journal articles maybe could keep you abreast of that. maybe you could get one of your class/school mates to give you access to robbins online? or what about webpath tutorials?
someone sent me this also:

I've heard the chapter on breast had some major revisions.

I've heard that the eye chapter pretty stayed the same though 😉 .

gunner.

The new Robbins is significantly larger than the previous version and has undergone several updates and revisions. It's an excellent text and I plan on buying the new edition each time. It would be worth your while to buy it at some point as it is worth reading before path boards. The old edition will do ya fine in the meantime...wait until you get a book fund in residency to pay for the new edition.

I checked out the latest Rosai and Ackerman on Amazon. Haha, $400, haha! That's so not happening right now. That book fund doesn't go too far in residency I imagine.

I'm with ya there. I was going to buy a laptop with some of my book fund money. But then I just got one for $800. So there is no way in hell I'm gonna spend another cent until that book fund kicks in!

I bought an expensive desk with my laptop money. (That desk I wanted you guys to talk me out of buying, but nobody even tried). I figure it'll still be going strong when I'm 80 years old, whereas the laptop would have been obsolete in a few years.

Hey, I told you about that laptop deal that same day when I found out about it and made the purchase (time was of the essence because it was only a one-day deal).

I had already purchased the desk so wasn't able to justify the expense, even though it was a good deal.

Dell is always having deals of one kind or another. Here is a great site to check daily, if you're going to make a tech purchase anytime soon:

Can't let it go, can ya?

Robbins won't help you a ton for learning practical pathology...as above was said, Rosai's book, though voluminous, is much more geared towards the resident preparing for a career. And Sternberg's Histology for Pathologists is also a good fit.

Yaah, you are in charge of this board, so you must know a lot about Pathology. I am interested in dermatopathology because I hear you make good money, and I want to have a big house and nice car and lots of wimmens. Can you tell me how to become a dermatopathologist? Also, do they do skin biopsies? THANKS!!!1!!

Sorry, in order to get dermpath you need to have 240 or more on all three step exams, ace your boards, identify a new disease in derm, sleep with someone on the selection committee, and have perfect skin.

Or, you could just apply and see how it goes! 😉

Seriously, I want to make some mad bank. My grades have been pretty mediocre and my step 1 score is 182, can I match in dermpath? Can I then practice clinical dermatology after that? I hear that they work 20 hours a week and make sweet moolah. I really want to do Botox injections in Beverly Hills.
