Hey,
I was wondering if there are old nbme shelf exams available online? I'm just looking for some to practice with, because our school is giving us a shelf exam for some of our finals. I don't really know how it works, but I'm guessing the nbme sells old ones like their mcat exams i.e. 3r, 4, 5, 6, 7, etc.?

Thanks

In a word, no. They're actually pretty big tight wads when it comes to these exams. They track all the exam booklets, and you can only take the exam on certain days, which means you have to come back at the end of the next rotation if you have to miss for some reason.

The closest thing are the Pre-test books or Appleton&Lang, which are supposedly written by the same people who write the shelf exams. IMHO, they're pretty horrible approximations and can be very hit or miss depending on the specialty.

My shelf exam for those is coming up ina few weeks because we're on a block schedule.

Old shelf exams are not released because the nbme cycles the shelfs. In other words, you might get the same shelf exam that last years class got, or the year before. Since they recycle exams they are pretty tight with the test material. In fact, before every shelf exam the proctor has to read to us the rules about what is prohibited, which includes MEMORIZING test questions. If you do get a hold of an old shelf exam and someone in the faculty finds out, woe to you. They dont mess around with this as this could affect the school greatly in the accreditation proccess.

Our prof. wrote it, Dr. Klein, so I'm probably biased, but our class scored 78th percentile ave.
Be able to spot everything on an EM and the proteins it interacts with and the disease it may cause or be a part of. Pretest does an excellant job at questioning you in a way you haven't and will have good concise explanations.
If you can make it through, it will prepare you.

i read the BRS Histo/Cell Biology. that one book will help you rock the shelf exam. even more good news: it's a pretty quick read and you can get through it in about 2-3 days.

Really? I have it and glanced through it and thought it was the worst of the BRS's...
