Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and hope I can get some answers. I am from Chicago suburbs and Planning on going to The University of Mississippi this fall as a Pre Med student, Has anyone on here gone to Ole Miss as a Pre Med student and What do you think of the University for Pre Med and Medical school?

Thank you

Probably not the best place for this post. Since such a good chunk of matriculants at UMC come from Ole Miss, you might want to pose this question in the UMC-specific thread:

I went to Ole Miss, but I graduated a decade ago so I'm not the most up-to-date source of information. My Ole Miss UG degree has gotten me interviews at a number of top-10 programs, but as always, ymmv.

You'll be fine.

Just work hard and keep a balanced life so you have enough time for work and to do other things that interest you out of class (clubs/sports/whatever).

You aren't going to get a lot of Ole Miss-specific info on here, as there aren't many students from Ole Miss on here. You've made this thread a number of different places trying to get info and I'm afraid you're getting about all the info that you'll receive. PM me if you have specific questions about the school or programs. As Cliche alluded to, where you go to undergraduate has a marginal influence on where you'll get in, so just do your best and stay focused. It's a little early to start sweating about much other than what your major will be. Take a deep breath.

Find out the specifics on whether you'll be considered a resident of the state of Mississippi at the time of application. It's really not as clear cut as you'd think. Some schools (the ones I'll be dealing with in the summer) do not consider students enrolled in the university to be state residents for medical school purposes. This has caused me to change my state residency from the state of the school which I'm attending (AL) to the state I grew up in (GA). And this is despite being independent from my parents, living in the same apartment for 4 years, and paying state taxes. Apparently there are some really strict rules of residency for some schools, especially for state-funded schools.

i think for UM med school you have to have lived in the state for 12 consecutive months before matriculating to be a resident, unless you have a parent who is a full time employee of Ole Miss. i dont' know if they have a clause that excludes people who fulfill the 12 month requirement minimum but who are enrolled in an institution of higher learning at the time, but i wouldn't be surprised if they did.
