Hi i'm an italian dental student. The next year (i hope!) i'll be graduated in dentistry and I'll be 24.... but is not enought for me. In fact i'd like to do maxillofacial surgery but in Italy (and the most of the EU) only MD can do it while for dentists can only perform minor oral surgery... (no orthognatic, plastic, tumor, TMJ op....)

So this is the question: can an international student, after getting a DDS with a ISP in US try to do OMFS? Is it possible, hard or impossible? Do you know someone non US citiz who is attending a residency in OMFS?
Thankssssssssss

Hey River.
I'd say it is possible, yet very hard. It has been done though ... nothing super-human about it.
OMFS and Ortho are probably 2 of the most sought after residencies, so you will probably be up against some of the highest scores among dental students.
I would also suggest that you pursue some kind of post grad training in surgery (residency, MSD or equivalents) in your home country of Italy, in order to gain some leverage over "in-grown" american graduates.
Having said all that, I am sure that someone else on this forum will be able to better direct you than myself. I just thought I would share my experience here. I know 2 OMFS foreign grad residents, 1 ortho and 1 endo.
You might want to post your question also in the "Dental Residency" forum in addition to this one.

Good Luck.

Thanks a lot!
It'd be great to study in US... i kwon that is not easy at all, i'd to learn english well and i need to save money... one thing that may make any kind of decision harder is that my father is a dentist and has an office with his 2 brothers.... so i'll get a job as soon as i get a degree... then it could be a little frustrating to restart a university when i'm already a dentist, with a good european standard's degree and a great salary...
Maybe that i've a dream....
