Hi there, I would like to apply to OMFS after I complete a 1 year GPR program at montefiore, however, I am confused about the process.

I understand I need to take the CBSE and possibly apply to internship programs first. My GPA isn't the greatest-around average/50% of the class, and I have done research/presented a poster during 3rd year.

Do I have any shot of matching to an OMFS program if my CBSE score high? Additionally, how do you apply to an internship program-is it via PASS, and do you have to pay for these programs?

Are you a D4? Why not consider doing an internship instead of a GPR?

Generally internships are paid positions. I believe there is a thread on here for internship opportunities

hi yes I am a d4, i matched at montefiore for GPR. I did not really consider doing OMFS until very recently. I have had some good exposure to extractions and medically complex patients and I would like to pursue this after the GPR.

Try get as much exposure as possible to other aspects of OMFS during the rest of your D4 and GPR so that your pursuit is based on more than extractions and medically complex patients, you'll get a much better idea of if the specialty is actually what you're seeking or if you just want to be a GP who does lots of surgical procedures/handles medically complex patients.
As for internships, most are not through the PASS application (but making one will likely make it easier for you because then everything is all in one place). I was in a similar situation where I applied after my GPR to noncat internships only so I got all of my materials together (CV, transcripts, personal statement, 2x2 headshot) and sent it to programs in November/December, then followed up with certain programs prior to match day to express that I was very interested in their program.
It will be tough because most intern spots are preferentially given to those didn't match that cycle but hopefully you'll be able to find a program that takes you. For perspective (not to discourage, just to inform), I reached out to 10ish programs about being interested in doing an internship there, sent my materials to 6, re-expressed my interest to 2 of them in the two weeks prior to match, and got an offer for an internship spot from one of those on the evening of match day.
The whole process does get confusing but getting everything organized and getting a plan together puts you more than halfway there so you're doing the right thing at this point early in the year

I am one of the OMFS residents at Monte, try to shadow us as much as you can, we have 2-3 clinics which you will rotate in with us for a week or two at a time. It is definitely possible to match into OMFS after doing a GPR year, I will say its more likely to do so after doing an intern year but nonetheless possible. I will say that intern year with OMFS and GPR are very different things and very different responsibilities so try and get as much exposure to OMFS in general as you can this upcoming year. Good luck!
