I REALLY want one/both but am having trouble pulling trigger on either. If I had to pick one it would for sure be the Mac Pro, but still. Have any OMFSers found either of these to be helpful or is it just a luxury?

I heard an iPad is really great for locating the nearest Starbucks and keeping good notes of what each attending and chief likes in the coffee during your intern year.

I can't see how it would be useful specifically for OMS, other than whatever redeeming qualities it has in general.

I mean, it's too big to jam inside someone's mouth to knock their teeth out...

You don't need an excuse (especially something random like OMFS) to get either (especially the macbook pro), they both have enough inherent redeeming qualities/uses on their own to warrant the purchase for just about any life situation.

As for the ipad specifically, I would wait for the 2nd generation; just a personal policy of mine, never buy the first gen of a new product design.

i could definitely see hospitals using ipads for their PACS and EMR systems in the near future... would make things hell of a lot easier with viewing records and imaging.

lol dude you dont need an excuse. i have an ipad and i love it. i use a program called DDSGP (pricey $399) but its an amazing patient education tool. other than that i love it for general web browsing, watching movies, playing games during travel. amazing (i mean amazing) battery life.

Unfortunately not at county hospitals anytime soon.

I was thinking about this the other day on medicine rounds. instead of writing everything down on your rounds paper and forgetting orders and having to look up labs, you could see both and enter in things as needed while rounding on the patient. This would definitely save time.

I have seen a few OMFS practices use it with programs for patient education. They actually watch a cartoon video of the procedure and then can sign and fill out forms on them. Patients love it.

I use my iPad every single day for entertainment and general web mayhem. Probably once a week for academic reasons.

If you already have a strong laptop, get the iPad because it is really fun and convenient. If you do not have a good laptop that will last you plenty more years, I'd go for the more practical laptop purchase.

The iPad is way better than the kindle for pdfs. There is no comparison.

I will put my Nook toe to toe with your iPad for pink slips any day of the week for reading articles/lectures.

Can your nook get angry birds though? How in the heck do you crap on the toilet without angry birds?

Gold standard. This make the iPad/ ipod touch an invaluable porcelain experience
