Hey all ya'll applying to OMFS this year. I thought it would be good if we started a thread to see where people have heard from for interviews, since lots of deadlines are approaching people should start hearing from programs. Anyways if you would like to share we could do it here, (who knows we maybe seeing each other on the interview circuit.
Goodluck to all.

So far I heard from:

Columbia
NYU
LIJ
UMDNJ - New Jersey
St. Rafeal
Seton Hall
Woodhull
NYMC
Montifiore
Kings County
Drexel

Are you guys going to be more partial to 4 years or 6 years? UMDNJ has both the 4 and the 6, which one are you trying for? And in the end which one are you going to be happy with?

I think this is totally dependent on the applicant, i've meet some that are applying to both tracks and some that are just applying to one.
I think that there are pluses and minuses to each, and that you really have to consider if you want to do an extra 2 years, and if it will help you with what you want to do as an OMFS.

Anyone have any idea about the numbers this year, and how many people are applying across the board.

Saw this in another thread and was curious. For those applying this year (or in the past) would you mind listing your #applications, # interview invites, #interviews attended, # programs ranked?

When is the OMFS match day?

OMFS match day is the same as all the others, with the exception of Ortho. It is on Jan. 31.

What are everyone's thoughts are programs you've visited so far? Which programs were you impressed by and which were you not?

Finally done interviewing, and now the hard part... waiting.

I have to say that after interviewing there wasn't really a program that i wasn't impressed by. The question is what is best for me when it comes to my rank list. These programs offer so many different things, and the truth of the matter is that when your interviewing all the programs look good, since that's all you hear for two days straight is how great the programs are. After every interview i was more and more confused about which is best, and have decided that there really isn't a "best" program, but only a program that will suit me best.

Anyways that's just what i think (which really doesn't mean a lot), but for right now i'm just hoping to match anyone of those programs.

Do 6 year programs offer any advantage in terms of what you can do when you are done with the program?

In terms of the different types of surgeries, there is no different between the 4 and 6 year programs. They are both trained in the same manner. The only difference may be that a 6 yr can get into fellowship programs which a 4 yr cannot.

Many people think that the MD opens ceretain doors for your practice (cosmetics). My opinion is that the plastics and ENT guys still see you as a dentist doing facelifts and the turf battle still has to be fought. The bottom line is that they can't expect you to do all the huge trauma cases which OMS's are renowned for and then think they can restrict you from doing lesser procedures such as cosmetics. That's the side of their argument they can't defend. It all comes down to money. The plastics/ENT guys don't mind sharing the cases that don't pay (trauma) but they always seem to raise a fuss when a cash-paying customer is involved.

I was wondering if any of you already accepted into programs got emails or other contact from program directors after your interviews, and if it really means anything, or is it all a part of "the game".

I strongly disagree.

Being in a very wide scope 6 year program there are things we do down here in shreveport that without a medical degree you would have no chance in you know what of ever getting privalages for without the MD. The only four year I can think of some cancer and recon is Marx down there in miami without the MD or MD program, but he is somehow grandfathered in and most likely wouldn't get the privalages elsewhere.

Now can a four year degree do the surgery? Of course, but politics will never allow it.

Almost every wide scope OMFS program in the country is 6 year, because it would be pointless to get the surgery training without the MD because you'd never be able to do it after residency.

You are right in terms of "traditional" type oral surgery procedures, either program is going to teach you to do those. And I would say that there are many 4 year programs that teach this much better than 6 year programs.

It all depends on what you want to do when your done....

Good luck on match day guys, I'm sure you;ll all do fine.....
