Can any OMFS residents recommend a treatment for trismus following wisdom teet extractions? open 7 times for 7seconds, 7 times a day, warm compress, what pain meds, any antibiotics?
Is Norgesic good for this purpose ?
What muscle relaxer can a general dentist prescribe for trismus if any is indicated?
Thanks in advance

Let me jump in before a lock is put on it. Warm pad application, muscle relaxants and taped together tounge blades (put in mouth for 3 minutes then repeat). DP

most surgical extractions have some degree of trismus for a couple of days. no need to treat. usually resolves w/i 1 week. i don't like throwing pills at patients to treat a normal physiologic response such as this. if trismus persists beyond a few days, some gentle jaw opening exercises a few times a day should suffice. prolonged trismus should make you start thinking of tmj trauma (use of too large of a bite block, or too much torque) resulting in hemearthrosis. Then jaw exercises are important especially in the younger population. I don't like the shoving a stack of tongue blades technique.
