What can you guys tell me about the salary for OMFS radiologists in academia vs private practice and what sort of job opportunities are there right out of school?

Im sure there are much better answers coming your way. Im a D4 and I met one oral radiologist. My impression was that it was very difficult to solely do private practice as a radiologist. Im pretty sure they also were struggling with finding a stable academia gig as well.

I wasn’t interested in the field much to begin with but that quickly turned me farther away. Hopefully someone else can give some more positive outlook outside of my anecdotal experience.

The OMF radiologists at my school argue that you could make the same as an associate dentist (but working from home just reading CBCTs and stuff)... Aside from that, the rest go into academics... Not sure how true it is.

As for an OMFS radiologist, sounds dope, but not sure if it exists...

It is true. I have talked to a couple. But similar to a dentist associate with 100% more work in gaining a referral base.

So basically, work after residency includes academic positions or private practice. I know some people in academics, some in private practice. Now, there are radiology reading firms that work with clients (dentists, oral surgeons, ENTs in some cases) and hire the radiologists as employees or independent contractors and provide them with the cases and pay per report. Now, some do extremely well, some decent enough.

The other option is too find clients on your own, some of the radiologists conduct CE courses, become a part of study groups and so forth to introduce themselves to other dentists/specialists.

The business aspect includes opening a diagnostic imaging center of your own, which is more common in Asian countries then here as a lot of the dental offices buy their own machines unlike a lot of other places, especially the developing countries.

As far as financial output is concerned, it varies a lot between one radiologist and another but a person is doing very well and gets a lot of cases to read, can make pretty good money, somewhat comparable to other dental specialists (not as much as surgeon though obviously).
