Hi all! I am curious how current residents and practitioners feel the state of OMFS residency is currently, how it has/has not changed over the years, and possibly how you see it changing in coming years.

I know this may be a bit of a nebulous thought, but I have failed to find any other threads or anything else online that answers the question. The thread is left intentionally broad to allow for opinions on many aspects of residency.

Please do not respond with "go ask someone in real life". My hope for this thread is to generate ideas from lots of people from all over, who have had different experiences!

Thank you to anyone taking the time to reply and post their thoughts!

The field is great right now... We have a great gig, perhaps the best gig of all medical specialties.
No one can predict our future, or other medical specialties.

We've seen changes in the landscape of EM, when I was graduating from medical school, EM was the hot gig, 3 12 hour shifts a week, and you are raking in 400k. Now , it is overrun, and they can't fill residency spots.

Anesthesia was slow a few years ago, now it is super hot. Not one unmatched spot.

Reimbursements for medical specialties can be cyclical, when medicare thinks a type of doctor is making too much, they'll cut the RVU/reimbursements for a procedure, and then suddenly tonsils and adenoids don't look so hot to cut out.

One thing that is nice about OMS is insurance and the government has their paws less up our asses than our medical colleagues.

If I was to reapply now, I would pick a program that went unmatched and extern there. I would also get a super high cbse score...word of mouth goes far. an externship away from home speaks volumes.

Can you explain why you would pick an unmatched program?

because you aren't as great as you think you are to some of these PDs. the way they pick residents is inherently selfish and being a good person and having great grades isn't the "in" you think it is, especially for desirable programs in desirable locations. Its more about "does this person fit here."

A body is better than nobody. Some programs now can't be choosey.
