OMFS residency

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hey everyone! how are the OMFS residency programs in Illinois (Cook County, UIC, Loyola) and University of Iowa?
🙂😳😀

I've heard positives about Loyola, but never details on why it's decent?

The two OMFS programs out of Chicago, Cook County definitely over UIC. UIC OMFS is going down hill and from my sources that are current residents in other dental specialties at UIC, they even told me how bad the UIC OMFS department is!

I externed at Cook County for 3 weeks and I liked it (but mainly because of the residents and faculty members there and not for the training exposure). It's a small family atmosphere operation, it's a 4-year program with no MD option. They take two residents a year. Majority of the current residents are dental graduates from the midwest region. 98% of the full time faculty members are graduates from the program. Like any county hospital in a major city, lots of dentealveolar (lots of 3rds for 2nd years), oncology, and trauma. Lack in orthognathics, cosmetics, implants, and craniofacial exposure. Interns don't even go into the OR, heck, lets go another step up, 2nd years never go into the OR! I mean NEVER! Newer hospital, clean dental clinic, and it's non-malignant program.

If you want a 4-year program that is in a relaxed atmosphere, no residents really hang out outside of the program, basic oral surgery bread & butter procedures (except implants), in a newer hospital, and in an awesome city, then this is the program for you!

Forget UIC!

It's kind of sad that Chicago is such a great city, but without a standout OMFS residency program?! Any other thoughts from other?

thanks for replying. what are some of the best OMFS programs in the country?

This is a topic that is discussed often, so you might want to try a search.
However, I'm very biased to Pitt......but what do I know I'm just pre-dental?

Pitt is definately not the best program.......i spent a while there on externship.....it's got a decent scope.....but too much time is spent in medical school.....therefore, they lose that clinical time. If you havent' checked out some of the programs in the south....i.e. Texas and Louisiana....you need to....

Best program i think. I'm currently an intern. We do more here than most programs i visited or interviewed at. we do sinus lifts, hip grafts and mandibular fx in first year so you know what happens when you cheif. have a four and 2 six year spots
msg me if you have questions

What makes Chicago such a great place? I've visited there and was ready to leave the first day. Unless you're into that concrete/cold/windy/snarl-at-everyone-as-you-walk-by atmosphere.

Sounds like the Parkland OMFS clinic. :meanie:

Does anyone even have a good contact number for Cook County? I tried to call the PASS number 20 times and get an answering machine every time. Of course they don't have a website.

I can't get ahold of any of the programs in Chicago proper. Maybe that's how they want it . . .

LOL... yes this definitely characterizes the people (especially support staff) at UIC!
