Hello there,

I'm a D3 and I decided on OMFS kinda late, half-way through last semester. I've been studying for the CBSE since then and I'm registered to take the exam in couple weeks. BUT I don't think I'm ready to take it. I already scheduled an externship in March and I'm not even sure if I should even go there without my score. I've already done one externship at my school after I decided on OMFS to see if it's really the path I want to take.

I think I'm just starting to figure out how I should study for the CBSE. I've only had time to go over BnB once and half of Sketchy and most of UWORLD. None of NBME yet. I know a lot of people take it twice so it makes me think that if I should even apply this upcoming cycle.

Please give me any advice!

Thank you!

You should take it in February regardless of if you are prepared or not. Maybe you will retake but you will have the experience of the first test under your belt and it will help you a lot preparing for the second attempt if needed. You don't need a score to go on most externships.

It's too early to make the call to apply this cycle or not without that score. A lot can change between now and the test and I definitely didn't feel "ready" a few weeks out. Now would be a good time to take an NBME and review it on NBMEanswers.com to see where your strengths and weaknesses are. Good luck.

I don't care if you have a CBSE to extern. Come extern and then worry about the test later. I agree taking the CBSE as many times as you can to get the best score is the best practice out there. Don't hang your hat on one opportunity.

My final CBSE take was in July between D3 and D4 year. You are by no means late, just take it now, learn from this time around, and retake.

I will try my best this time. I just didn’t want the programs to think that I’m dumb doing externships even without my cbse scores.

They won't care in my experience the convo goes "you take the CBSE?" "what'd you get" "nice" or "-pained expression- not bad, gonna have to get that up"

Full speed ahead is the best way to handle all the stuff you have to do to apply. Do what needs to be done when it needs to be done, not when you are ready. You can always re do things. I had a pathetic cbse score on my first externship, no one cared. Just get it done. It’s totally normal to feel unprepared, even scatterbrained as you try and juggle dental school, clinicals, cbse, externships, etc. Externships are all about attitude, willingness to work hard, and being actively engaged and interested.
