Hey guys, I’m reaching out for advice for my first post on sdn! I was accepted this cycle to a dental school without an OMFS program but it was far and away my cheapest option and one of my favorite schools so that’s where I decided to attend. I’m fairly confident OMFS is what I want to pursue. Of course I’m young and still have plenty of time to make a certain decision but so far every time I shadow different specialities and GPs my thoughts become more directed to OS just because of pure interest and a desire to be able to work in the hospital more frequently. I know a lot of people on this forum bash the “gunners” who simply say OMFS without ever truly being involved however I’m keeping my radar up for other interests as well. I still wanted to ask as an incoming D1, to a school without an OMFS department, what all can I do to be as competitive as possible if this is the route I want to take. I know I need to keep my class rank up and that my CBSE score will play a big role but as far as ECs go what can I do? Should I study for the CBSE along with my basic science classss? Should I wait till I’m through the basic science curriculum to study in a more condensed time frame? When should I think about externships? Like I said I know it’s early but it’s never to early to think about your career, at least that’s how I view it. Any general advice would be really appreciated! Thanks guys.

The CBSE is the most important thing. You’re gonna want to get through first aid cover to cover and uworld at least once. Figure out a time frame that works for you to get that accomplished before you apply to OMFS. The hardest thing for you is going to be finding OMFS to write you letters of recommendation, and you’re gonna need three of them to write you letters. So, when you start dental school start talk to the graduating students that are going to OMFS for advice on getting letters. Good luck.

Thank you for your response! Have you heard anything about Dr. Ryan's Boards and Beyond? Ive heard its basically a video format of FA that some med students use in preparing for boards. I know first aids kind of like a bullet point review book and not really a good resource for an initial pass of the material. I didn't know if that would be a better resource since my schools doesnt have a med-based curriculum. Thanks.

I know it sucks, but you have to read first aid if you want to do well.
