Hey! So this might be a stupid thing to ask, but for OMM, exactly how naked do females have to get? I know this can vary among schools, but it's something I've been very curious about. I'm really insecure with my body, especially in front of people I don't really know. Am I gonna be in a bra and shorts in front of people? Can I wear a shirt instead? I feel so foolish for being worried about this!

I heard you will have to dress down to sports bra and shorts.
I understand how you are feeling but I don't think there are much other options. You will have to sign a "waiver(?)" before school, I believe.

Depends on the school. Most of the time at my school it's gym clothes, aside from when we're doing certain exams that require you to strip down to a sports bra, but we've got patient gowns for you to wear over your sports bra for those sorts of things.

OMM lab is awkward for all of a month, then you stop caring.

At my school, the first day the have everyone take their shirts off just to get everyone used to it, then scrub bottoms/tshirt from then on.

My go-to OMM "uniform".

Very Nice!

From the info I have collected, CCOM and Rowan wear scrubs top and bottom all the time. LMU-DCOM, LUCOM, DMU, and AZCOM wear t-shirt and shorts all the time. Same at KCOM and I think TUNCOM and ATSU-SOMA but there are times you may need to remove t-shirt. The rest are shirtless for males and sports bra for females.

It's not foolish to be concerned, but you should post this in your school specific thread if you already know where you're going. At my school, most girls wear shorts and a sports bra and guys just wear shorts without a shirt. Nothing is really enforced though, and I see people with t-shirts scattered around the lab (they're probably just too lazy to take them off). I seriously doubt you will care after a month or so.

Touro harlem is shorts only for guys and sports bra and shorts for girls, I believe.

Be prepared to get down to shorts and a decent sports bra on many occasions. However, you can keep your shirt on for many labs (feet/ankles, knee, head, etc etc)
And yes, after 4-6 weeks while being simultaneously exposed to naked cadavers, you'll forget your inhibitions.

Cusom is shorts/sports bra on some days....shorts tshirt for most though

You get used to it

We get randomly assigned from competency check offs. I had a female Muslim partner once and the fellow asked her if she was comfortable working with a male. He offered to let her do the competency with a female partner if she prefered.

The fellows at KCUMB are pretty respectful and acommodating.

Once I didn't feel like taking my shirt off during a check off. It wasn't a big deal.

At KCUMB we rarely take our shirts off but I'm only done with 1st semester.

Many people are uncomfortable removing their shirts in front of strangers... you're definitely not alone. After the first few labs you just get used to it. Prepare to be asked to show up in shorts and t-shirt (for you + a sports bra underneath), and to have to remove your t-shirt when applicable to work on the area being taught in lab that day. At no point will you be naked or in your usual bra. Sports bras make everything less awkward for all parties. If you feel uncomfortable, speak with your OMM professors/fellows and they should be more than willing to make a reasonable accommodation, such as pairing you with a female. Just keep in mind, this is a professional environment and everyone is required to act as such in order to learn and practice.

You are going to have patients who are much more embarrassed

It's true. As med students/physicians we are generally more comfortable with the human body than most. Every time we are doing something in OMM or clinical medicine lab that seems embarassing, I only imagine how much harder it must be for a sick and vulnerable patient.

I can see what you mean from my experience seeing patients being touched by doctors during an assessment where they generally, but not always, look a little uncomfortable. Other animals touching us like that is just weird. However, I'm sure there's a difference between being touched in an OMM lab with a bunch of shirtless people around and being touched in the privacy of an exam room.

We are mostly in tshirt/shorts but there are times that you go down to just a sports bra (you tend to be gowned for this as well)

If you are Muslim exceptions can be made.

For the most part people get over it relatively quickly.
