OMM Classes

I will get a burka and tell them that I don't wanna get touched bec. of some religious concern 🙂
jk
Yeah, I am also pretty concerned about this. My body is not so nice with 6 pac and shit. Its pretty lousy looking with hair on chest and back which I need to shave before showing up to OMM... I know that sucks ... and it would suck anymore if we have a girl partner ..
I need more insight on this ... anyone?

There are easier ways to meet girls than going to med school

Pisiform,
I feel your pain. To put it bluntly I am one of the 2/3 of the US population who has too much adipose tissue. I am really unhappy about this shorts and sports bra thing for women. But since there is no escaping it I am simply knocking myself out trying to lose as much weight as possible in the next ten months. No kidding, I am exercising 45-90 minutes every single freaking day.
Come on guys--we're going to be doctors and dealing with worse body higene than fat and backhair.
That being said, shouldn't we follow some of our philosophy and try to be in good shape? Holistic medicine, preventative care, et cetera? No one expects supermodels but a 400lb person would be a bit much.

I don't know about anyone else but I am hoping to have some fresh ink to show off.
I'm also hoping my ink will be fresh and complete
you can always spray tan yourself a 6 pack.
I personally am gonna try for the back 6 pack. Just having 1 six pack isn't cool anymore. But if you can pull off a 12er, then you really get the ladies!!!!!!!
a "6 back"?
or how bout "6 back pack".
Hhahaa this has actually been such a motivator for me!!! The thought of being in a sports bra right now is frightening so hopefully I will be prepared for next year....as I'm eating a candy bar right now....bad candy bad!
Hahaha good thing I'm a girl and don't have to worry about the persian rug...but I guess that means I will have to shave every day that we have OMM!!!

It's been the best motivation I have ever had in my life. Every time I think, "Oh, I am too tired to exercise today. I'll just skip one day." Or maybe I think, "I'll have another piece of that [insert favorite fat/carb/sugar food here]." My very next thought is,
"Shorts and a sports bra. Ten months. "
And then I come to my senses.

Is it shorts and a sports bra at EVERY school? CCOM students were telling us they wear scrubs I think. I'm always cold so that is what worries me the most haha
yes ccom we wear just scrubs, and you can wear a lightweight thin long sleeve shirt under your scrub top in the winters...it does get chilly in teh lab...brrr
ccom is also full scrubs
minus 1 for UMDUMDNJ-SOM is not one of the schools where all the girls are in sports bras and the guys are shirtless. You just need to come in gym clothes or something similar -- just not jeans or baggy cargo pants.

although I wouldn't say I'm in a bad shape, I promised myself I would start get in tiptop shape the moment I get accepted to my school of choice!

lol I used to think about this stuff...but in reality you have your shirt on 75 percent of the time you are in there...and then when you are working with your partner you take it off for like 50 seconds....of which the whole time you are on an OMM table.
aka....not as big of a deal as youd think it would be 🙁
The only awkward time in OMM was day 1 when we did a "symmetry exam" where you basically stand there shirtless while someone youve known for less than a week stares at all your asymmetries haha.

When i sat in on OMM lab at CCOM, everyone was wearing scrubs. Do the vast majority of DO schools do this besides CCOM?

damn CCOM was one of my top choices, but not taking of my shirt after I work hard on those abs is a HUGE NEGATIVE, down to the bottom goes CCOM! hehe, JK. CCOM pls give me an interview!
Wait, do hairy guys really need to get rid of excess body hair for OMM? I've grown to like mine, but if I'm going to be needing weekly waxing sessions, I want to start finding a spa now.

same here, but naturally, i want to procrastinate and postpone this...

At AZCOM we have to wear OMM approved clothes so no jeans or anything. That being said guys are not sitting around shirtless and most girls don't wear just sports bras. I usually wear scrub pants and a t-shirt. Most everyone wears comfortable pants and a t-shirt or shorts and a t-shirt or tank top.
The guys wear gym shorts and the girls the same with a sports bra. It really is no big deal.
Every day in OMM lab a student doctor is called forward and is the patient for the Professor's demonstration. All of your somatic dysfunctions or body defects are laid bare (no pun intended) before your entire lab section.
In surface anatomy class, some of the body structures that you have to find and palpate (yes that means touch) are in some, shall we say, private or nearly private places - like the lateral angles of the sacral area (yes, I do mean the vertical split in your lower backside).
The lack of attire is the least of your worries. Hey, OMM lab is actually fun and interesting and after seven weeks of medical school I have concluded that OMM actually works.
Seriously, all the OMM labs are serious and professional but the caveat is there is no modesty in medical school.
No one has mentioned this but another class in OMS I is primary care skills. In addition to the usual lung and heart sounds there is female breast exam and male and female GI exams (likely more embarassing than hair and fat). So, be prepared - get over your concerns and don't worry about how you look. In medical school, we are all too concerned about helping each other and in passing the next test and learning the skills. The daily mantra is "seven oh equals D. O."
P.S. So I don't scare you, female breast exam and male and female GI exams are done with models or paid actor patients called "standardized patients."

Alright so what I got out of that is: INCREASE ALL GLUT WORKOUTS!
Ain't nothing wrong with working out and stuff before you get into school and your first OMM class, but --
5 minutes into your first technique/palpation/whatever, everyone will be too busy trying to figure out wtf is going on to care about what you look like.
So go crazy with your sit-ups, and remember the more body types in your class, the more palpation experience you can walk away with 👍

Thanks for your insight. I don't understand your guy's mantra, could you explain a bit ?
do they pair girl/girl partners and guy/guy partners or is it just random every class?

I would assume that 70=passing, meaning that if everybody can get at least a 70 everyone becomes a doctor.

I'd guess that is what it means, too! Funny, I was just telling my brother last night that I am probably not going to be at the top of the class when I get to med school but
"You know what they call the person who graduates at the bottom of their med school class?.....Doctor."

At GA-PCOM we chose our own partners in the first class (though there's nothing to keep us from changing partners week to week). During class you will often find small groups intermingling to share their findings--for example we had a fellow student with spina bifida oculta in one of our classes.do they pair girl/girl partners and guy/guy partners or is it just random every class?
I wouldn't want to attend a school that is only this way. Its time to grow up. You will be a doctor one day, which means seeing patients that are both male and female. you HAVE to learn to assess both (unless you go into OBGYN).do they pair girl/girl partners and guy/guy partners or is it just random every class?

no s&%$ you have to see patients of both sexes thanks for enlightening us

Seven oh or, stated another way a grade of 70 equals passing each test/class and eventual graduation.
"seven oh = D.O. " it rhymes.
