I heard that beginning with classes graduating in 2007, students will be required to take an OMM practical to get licensed. Has anyone heard anything more specific about this?

I haven't heard anything about an OMM practical but there is going to be a Physical Exam portion in conjunction with Step 2 rolled out in the next year. I haven't heard any details about what the test entails but apparently it is only going to be administered in Philly. I am guessing it might have some basic manipulation but is probably going to parallel what the USMLE is doing with the H&P practical.

I was told that there will be OMM on the exam. I have seen the info regarding the exam on some some website, NBOME I think...

There is OMM on the practical portion, but no HVLA

Here's info from the NBOME on the PE exam.

The class of 2005 has to take it and pass it in order to take step 3 (to be licensed).

I'm pretty sure that since it is a "History and Physical" Exam, you only have to diagnose. Therefore, the simulated patient may present with some musculoskeletal problems that would require OMT, but you would only have to diagnose and document the lesion. It would be totally voluntary if you wanted to actually "treat" the lesion. This is how it was explained to me by an NBOME official.

Also, only 25% of the 12 patients (3) will have an OMT-related problem.

However, I wouldn't trust this 100%.

Thanks for the information, my mind is eased a little now 🙂
