No, I'm not trolling and this is actually a serious concern/question (I also did a search and didn't come up with anything useful).

I'll be starting med school next year and I'm wondering if there are any current DO students that have tattoos. I have two tattoos and I'm a bit concerned that it might be an issue during OMT classes. My tattoos are easily hidden with clothing (one small one on my deltoid, the other wraps around my arm on the upper part of the biceps) so I'm not concerned during clinicals.

Are DO schools and administrations fairly tolerant of future doctors with tattoos? (I hope so...I'm hoping to get a new one on the back of my neck below the collar line). I've heard horror stories about students being threatened with sanctions because of "professionalism" violations, etc. Comments?

I don't think you have anything to worry about! I've got a tattoo, and I've only gotten compliments when others see it during lab. One guy in our class has sprawling multiple tattoos across his chest and arms, and it's fun to look at - makes the time go faster. 😀 I really don't think the administration has the time or energy to care.

Don't sweat it at all. Unless your tattoos convey some message like your life long devotion to the KKK or something outrageous then it is no big deal. A number of guys have them in our class and no one has said anything. More and more young women are getting them too. Tattoo's are simply part of the evolution of modern culture, which any progressive medical school should acknowledge. They represent your First Ammendment rights, and any school would be treading on thin ice to challenge your right to have them. You have a lot more to be worried about in starting your medical school education. I would not let this be a concern.

oh man i never even thought of that. the piercings i thought about, but never what tattoos would do.

here at LECOM (known for being anal) a lot of people have tattoos and they are all tasteful and nothing more than something fun to look at...

No one cares as long as it's in good taste...
