I am a D.O. student and am considering doing an undergraduate Osteopathic Medicine Fellowship.

Does anyone have any opinions regarding the potential benefit of doing an extra year of med school to enhance my chances of matching into more competitive programs, i.e., CA programs.?

When I interviewed at Mayo, all the guys from Kirksville SOM had done an OMT fellowship. I don't know if that helped them get interviews but I'm sure that helped. I was asked at more than one program about my teaching experience and how comfortable I felt teaching medical students. If you plan on applying to academic PM&R programs affiliated with a med school, I think that fellowship would help strengthen your application.

I don't know if it really worth one year though....

If residency is the ONLY reason you are considering the fellowship, I would NOT do it. I think you will not enjoy the year and it won't help as much as you think. If you want to do it and it would be a plus to have it help your application, then by all means, do it. I don't know which school you go to but if you can get in contact with the guys at Kirksville - that may help as well.

Good luck!

I did the OMM fellowship. It is definitely a set of skills that comes in handy, but it is not like it's a "sure thing" getting you a good residency. You should pursue it because you really want to refine and develop your manual medicine skills---which doing a OMM fellowship might be your only opportunity to do so. Believe me, you won't have time in residency and you'll have even less time as a practicing physician.
