On AMCAS, what detail confirms me as a California state resident?

When I sit down to fill out the AMCAS, what exact feature makes me a resident of a certain state, namely California?

A copy of my driver's license?
The permanent address of my parents?
My permanent address?
Financial dependency of me on my parents?
Tax returns for me or my parents?
What exact detail is it?

For those who have already applied, I would appreciate it, specifically for California med schools would be best. Thanks.

T'would be helpful for me as well.

Well, as a Cali resident...All I did was put my address in California and there haven't been any issues. I'm not sure exactly how they check that you have residency but if you're a real resident, it shouldn't be a problem.

But you see my family moved to a different state during my first year of college, though they still own a house in Cali (though now rented to some people)

my questions would be this:

1. Have you been living in California INDEPENDENT of your parents?
2. Are your parents claiming residency elsewhere?
3. Are you their dependent?

If YOU are independent of your parents have been living in California for the last year for noneducational purposes you should be fine.

1. I have not been living in California for the last 2.5 years, because I go to a private school in a different state.
2. Yes, parents have claimed the residency of the new state into which they moved.
3. Yes, I am their dependent, financially, as of today. I would be willing to change that to independent if I have to in order to claim CA state residency.

I do however have a valid CA state driver's license and my parents own houses in California.

I don't believe you will qualify for state residency. The address that goes into AMCAS is your permanent address (mailing address is not used for residency verification). In this case, it would be where your parents are living in the new state, unless you have claimed permanent residence elsewhere as an independent.

You're a resident of the new state then.

regardless of my California state driver's license?

It isn't AMCAS that is relevant.

Wherever you matriculate will ask you to fill out a verification of residency form or something similar. Your school will determine residency from the information you provide on that form (at least this is how UC undergrad does it).

Basically they ask a few questions about voter registration, working status, address for last few years...

...

If AMCAS isn't relevant, then how do they determine if you're an instate candidate for med-school?

Someone please just try to answer the question that was made in post #1. kthnxbye.

The MSAR says that if you are financially dependent on your parents, your state of residency is the same as their permanent address. From what you've said, you do not appear to be a CA resident.

To be clear, the state that issued your drivers license can be used to determine your state of residency only if you are financially independent.
