Hey all! 🙂

I've been a long time viewer yet first time poster here.

I got a C- on my first orgo class for many reasons (i.e. horrible first time prof, 20+ credit hours, and a family member passing away that quarter.) My undergrad is still on a quarter system so the orgo classes are broken down to 3 lecture classes and 2 labs.

That was the only C- I received during my undergraduate career. Any thoughts or suggestions as to whether I should retake the class at this point (or attempt to explain it during interviews?) I know several schools have mentioned 'no lower than C the on pre-reqs' and I was wondering if they strictly adhere to it.

Thanks!

re-take it. I can't remember who it was, but there was someone else on here who was getting rejections for this exact thing.

i had a c- in orgo, got waitlisted in NOVA and TOURO NV, accepted in TOURO NY, and interviews waiting at WESTERN, TOURO CA (i denied), and WVSOM (i denied), and a hold at MIDWESTERN AZ and an interview hold at MIDWESTERN CCOM.

i was asked about it once in NOVA, and i told them that frankly i did get a C- but thats nothing to complain about because my gpa of 3.7 and science of 3.5 was still higher than their average as a school and having taking 75+ hours of science courses. That may be the reason i got waitlisted there though lol.

A lot of schools have C cutoffs for pre-req courses, which means a C- should generally be retaken. I think it's in your best interest to just retake the class, especially if you know (shown by your circumstances) that you can do better.

I actually got a C- in Orgo I as well. It was because of a horrible professor, who lied about what was gonna be on the final. I wanted to show med schools that I could, in fact, do Orgo, so for Orgo II, I got an A. One of the highest grades in the class. I then retook Orgo I in the summer and also got an A and scored the highest the teacher had ever seen on exams, and that retake Orgo I professor actually wrote me a letter of recommendation to medical school. I haven't gotten in anywhere yet, but I had two interviews at WVSOM and UMDNJ SOM and at both schools the interviewers said I was a strong candidate. So the message here is, even if you think you messed up somehow, there's always a chance to make a crazy comeback.

I got a 2.0 in Orgo II, (worst class of all time), but I still manged to be accepted. I wouldn't retake the class if you dont have to, (because it's a pre-req), and it's the only sore spot on your transcript. Good luck! 🙂

Yes, but a 2.0 does not equal a C-. Some schools do not count C- as passing, i.e. minimum requirements.

Most DO schools (at least all the ones I applied to) required a C in all pre-reqs. Considering you got a C-, you MUST retake the class (again for many, not all, programs).

Also, it'll show the admissions committee you have perserverence, and (considering I'm sure you can get at least a B on a retake class) that you have the ability to learn and understand ochem. G'luck

In my opinion you MUST retake the course. MANY of the DO schools won't even look at your app. without it. Not because you aren't qualified, but because you won't meet their minimum guidlines. I believe they are more strict on this rule than the overall gpa rule. Also, I know you have reasons for making the C- ( and if it's your only one them I'm sure they are true), but most people don't like to hear excuses. I'm really not trying to be insensitive, but just think of how many people say those things over and over. Wouldn't you get sick of hearing it? Just retake and let them know for sure you know the material.

Correcto.

i dont understand, i had a C- in orgo II, but still have yet to be denied by ANY osteopathic medical school and have had about 6 dif interview. the only explanation i see is either they are letting me in because i did better in biochem which many school can replace a semester of orgo II with biochem, or they are calculating my lab grade too which was an A with the C- which brings me closer to a C+/B- over all.

You can get lots of interviews without completing the prereqs first...but there's a chance that you may get a conditional acceptance based on a satisfactory re-take grade in your delinquent scores. I've seen it happen more than once.

i graduated 2 years ago. i have yet to really get scourned for having a C- in orgo II, or denied post secondary (only waitlisted after interview).

But, i do recommend others that have a C- in orgo that do not have at least a 3.5 science gpa to retake it.
