Hey folks,

It's been awhile since I've posted. I do read threads on here from time to time and have found the advice very helpful. I'm at the beginning of this process and don't feel I have a lot of advice to give others yet. Hopefully that will change as time goes on!

Anyway, to the point. . . I'm currently taking Organic Chemistry lecture, but it's the only class I'm taking. And I'm not taking lab, b/c I've been thinking about getting pregnant with #2 and have read it's unwise to take lab during pregnancy. I'm home with my 17 month old son during the day and work about 20 hours a week. I almost cringe as I'm typing this, because I know some of you take on SO much, and I feel rather unworthy. 🙂 My mom broke her leg at the end of last summer (5 month recovery) and was the primary caretaker for my son, so I've not been able to commit myself to too many things while my husband is at work.

So the question is, will this part-time business look bad to adcoms? Before I had my son, I was taking two classes at a time and working about 30 hours a week. My plan is to do at least a semester or two of full time upper division biology classes to prove I can hack it with a bigger course load.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated--thanks!

I had similar concerns when I started my pre-med courses. I work full time so I can only take one class at a time, it did take me 2+ years, but I have A on every class and lab I took. Now I have two acceptances, and the topic of taking classes part time did not even come up on any of the interviews.

so IMO, do what's best for you so you can have as many A as possible, rock the MCAT, and the rest will fall in to places.

On the flipside, my interviewer asked if I took my classes part time. When I said no (which he could see) he said, "good, because most of the people that take part time classes can't handle the med school load, so we don't usually take the chance." This was one school and as the above poster mentioned, it isn't the rule. But you need a good reason to justify the lighter load.

First of all, congrats to both of you on your acceptances! What an exciting time--it must feel great to have gotten this far. 🙂

It sounds like ad coms' sentiments on part time school varies depending on the school. It feels a bit unsettling, especially since I don't know what programs I'll be applying to. I'm hoping to stay in the midwest, but we'll see. . .

Hopefully, I'll be able to work my way up to more credits, but this semester is just not a good time for that. Thanks for the feedback!
