Will take less than 30 seconds to click and give the ABA a piece of your mind anonymously

Here is what they just said regarding their February survey results

Not at all consistent with the resoundingly negative perceptions I hear from everybody

The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) is committed to ensuring its Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program (MOCA) remains relevant to our diplomates. As such, we invited more than 29,000 diplomates to participate in a MOCA survey in February to gain a better understanding of perceptions about the program and what should be done to improve it.
This survey is one of several tools we will use to inform a MOCA redesign currently underway. We are sharing this brief summary of the findings to keep you apprised of what we learned from the survey.
  • DEMOGRAPHICS: The survey response rate was 28% (8,141 respondents). Seventy-two percent of respondents are participating in MOCA and 28% are not, but nearly everyone reported they are familiar with what the MOCA program involves.
  • MOTIVATION FOR PARTICIPATION: A majority of survey respondents who participate in MOCA said they do so to fulfill a job requirement, maintain high standards and keep up with changing practices.
  • MOTIVATION FOR NOT PARTICIPATING: More than half of respondents who are not participating in MOCA cite cost and time commitment as two main barriers.
  • BEST PART OF PROGRAM: Most MOCA participants reported that they believe the Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment (Part 2) component is the most useful part of the program.
  • MOST CHALLENGING PROGRAM ELEMENTS: A majority of MOCA participants reported the most challenging components of the MOCA program include the Cognitive Examination (Part 3) and the Practice Performance Assessment and Improvement (Part 4) components. A majority of MOCA participants reported that they favor having a series of evaluation questions that accompany educational modules throughout the 10-year cycle versus the decennial cognitive exam (Part 3). With regard to Part 4, the ABA recognizes the need for more information and education to help diplomates successfully complete these requirements without creating additional burden on their time or resources. We are working to fill this information gap.
We appreciate the input that those of you who completed the survey have provided. Ultimately, making MOCA more meaningful will benefit our diplomates and can help improve patient care.
If you have recommendations for improving the MOCA program, please visit Feedback on MOCA to submit your ideas. Your input is invaluable in helping the ABA meet our diplomates' needs and the program's objective.
Sincerely,

I took that survey and it was poorly worded IMO. I commented whenever I could but that didn't seem to make an impression.
The ABIM has recently made some changes to their MOC. Change is on its way. We need to keep the pressure on these guys.

"A majority of MOCA participants reported that they favor having a series of evaluation questions that accompany educational modules throughout the 10-year cycle versus the decennial cognitive exam (Part 3). "

I feel that the concept of frequent cognitive assessments would benefit our patients the most. THE ABA and WE should not be focused on "do you know enough to practice" but instead on ensuring learning of new and solidification of basic knowledge. I would gladly do mandatory readings and a bunch of questions every 6 months then to binge and purge a bunch of useless material every 10 years. This concept would also eliminate the need to define what type of CME you must complete as the patient safety and ACE questions would be built in.

I thought the simulation center was very useful but they need to open many more of them and decrease the cost

The project is stupid busy work.

I said all of this in my survey and I am glad that they seem to be at least giving some lip service. However i am more interested in what actions they take.

I agree. I did the same. They have to realize what a crock of sheit the simulator portion is.

I'd be fine with online modules. I'm definitely not fine with paying so money and taking so much time away from work for a farce of a test.

I took that survey and it was poorly worded IMO.

Even the quoted survey results that got emailed out and quoted by joshmir are "poorly worded" ... or to be less charitable, reveal an obvious bias:

BEST PART OF PROGRAM
MOST CHALLENGING PROGRAM ELEMENTS

Not "worst part of program" ... they deliberately chose not to use that obvious counterpoint phrase very carefully to avoid having to put any negative vibes into their published survey results. Words matter, and this just reflects their bias and disinterest in hearing how awful the process is.

My exact sentiment as I filled out the survey. It was clear that the survey was rigged to come to a specific conclusion. I didn't even complete the survey as it felt like the only way to lodge any kind of protest was to refuse to play the game. I wonder how many of the other 70% of non-responders had the same thought
