For those unmatched and worrying about loans:

In the tri-state area:

Deferrement is granted for those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Not sure if its automatic but it will suspend payments for one year.

Everyone else:

Like Txlioness stated you can apply for deferrment for up to three years but you need to send in the forms as soon as possible. You qualify if you of course make below a certain wage amount but it is automatic if you apply for public aid and provide proof.

It sounds dire but you have to do what you can-

i just want to clarify, deferment is only for a year at a time under the income based repayment (IBR) plan. You have to submit proof of income annually (ie filed taxes, pay stubs). I went with this plan during my AAPPM preceptorship. I didn't have a monthly payment due to the amount I was earning.

For residency deferment, I am not sure on the number of years deferred initially. Meaning, if its deferred immediately for 3 yrs or if you have to renew annually as with the IBR plan.

I guess I will find out soon on that.
