Hello everyone. So, I may possibly be facing a dip in my GPA of about .02 points. It will still be well above average, but just a few more B's than usual. This will have been the heaviest load of my undergrad career, so I'll probably do better next semester. Is this slight drop a detriment that I'll have to explain at application time, or is it no big deal? Thanks.

Maybe you should reevaluate your priorities in life if you are concerned about a 0.02 point drop in your GPA.

Edit: I apologize for sounding like an arrogant jerk. Nothing personal.

My GPA freshman year was like 3.8, then sophmore fall I got a C, a B-, and a B, dropped my GPA way down and I still got into two schools. Really, don't stress about .02 drop in GPA, doesn't matter.

I certainly hope you're joking. If you're not, this makes me sick. BTW, a "few more B's" would certainly drop your GPA more than 0.02 points if your grades are normally "well above average." Get a life. Have a beer. Or six.

Yeah I'm kinda confused. The average gpa of accepted applicants is around a 3.5/3.6. If you are well above that average, a couple "b"s will drop you at least a full tenth.

Yup, especially if he's in his first or second year (which judging by the juvenile nature of his post, he most certainly is).

To the OP: Sorry if my tone is harsh, but you really need to change your myopic viewpoint.

I've bounced from a 4.0 one term to almost a 3.0 the next, followed by more random near-4.0s and near-3.0s. Honestly, when they're looking at a bazillion applications, they only get a chance to skim the final numbers.

Then again, it's not like I got in everywhere I applied, so who knows--maybe it held me back at the schools that rejected/waitlisted me.

I don't know.. with a drop of a whole 0.02 points, he is clearly a sub-par applicant. My advice to you hsperson is to give up medicine b/c you will never cut it with a 3.98. NEVER.

No, but seriously, do you really think they go through your grades semester by semester? If I had to guess they briefly skim your year-end grades (which are broken down in the AMCAS application) looking for hopefully upward trends if you had some bad semesters but mainly focus on your cumulative (I was going to write "cum." but that just looked strange). Good luck.

Thanks everyone. I must admit that the biting sarcasm in your posts is a bit of a relief. I hate to sound so anal and pretentious, I'm usually not, but this whole thing was really freaking me out because I'm always hearing about how "the upward trend means everything." I guess you're all right, my GPA will be good regardless so I should forget about it. I think I will go drink a beer or six. jk 🙂

I had a note in my application that said my gpa went down for medical reasons, it didn't go down A LOT, but my advisor still attached it because it was the only semester I didn't make dean's list and my interviewer kind of brought it up as a joke that it was even explained. I guess they don't look taht much if you have one subpar semester.
