HI guys,

I just wanted to update. I am so happy I just finished Chem 1 and Bio 1 with an A. I took these classes 13 years ago and Chem seemed so easy. It definitely took studying this time around. I know I have a ways to go but super happy I am one step closer.

I am taking Chem 2 and Bio 2 after Christmas break then will take the summer off. I then will start a year of Physics and organic chemistry. I know I need to take biochemistry before the MCAT but not quite sure where to fit it in. Should I take it with Physics 2 and Organic chemistry 2 or wait until the next fall?

My 2 cents: most schools are now requiring Biochem IN PLACE OF O-chem II. Not that you can do one or the other, but its the current trend in admissions to require O-chem I and Biochem. Check the MSAR. But when I did it, O-chem II was like baby biochem so I got away with taking it + self studying for the MCAT. I decided if my dream school accepted me + required Biochem, I would take it later, but I was on a specific schedule and wanted to apply in a specific cycle.

I know the school I wold like to attend has an option for either requirements. The old requirements or the newer ones with only one semester of physics and organic chemistry. Thanks for the input.

it really depends on how those courses are taught and how you feel about intensive science courseloads. my biochem was very orgo-heavy, and there was pretty strong emphasis on both biochem and organic chemistry on my mcat. plus my physics wasn't calculus based but second semester was very electromagnetism heavy.. it all depends.

to be on the safe side, I'd say better safe than sorry. I'd say the detriment from potentially rushing and not doing well is much more than if you took your time and did well, albeit at a slower pace.
