Let's take the guesswork out from someone who knows...
Are we talking, "northeast, anesthesiology programs filled 189/200 positions"
Anyone know?
 
I'm a little confused by the "Announcement of Results" listing.

I ranked 16 programs in my primary list , 9 of them in integrated/combined Plastics and the rest are categorical/prelim Surgery programs.

If I match into a 1-year prelim position, will I be getting the same "Congratulations, you have matched!" message?

You will receive an email that states: "Congratulations, you have matched to a one- year position!"

See all the various email wordings below, from http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/special_part/ind_app/match_results.html

At 12:00 noon on Monday of Match Week, applicants can learn IF they matched to a program on their rank order list by logging in to the NRMP's Registration, Ranking, and Results (R3) System using their AAMC ID and password. Applicants will be presented with one of the following messages on the Applicant Options page:
1. Congratulations, you have matched!
This message will be displayed for any applicant who is "fully" matched, including

  • Applicants who listed and matched to a categorical program and applicants who listed and matched to preliminary and advanced programs Other conditions also apply.
  • Applicants who listed only advanced programs on their certified rank order lists and did not list any preliminary positions on a supplemental rank order list will receive this message.
Similarly, applicants who included only preliminary programs on their certified rank order lists will receive this statement. The matching algorithm considers an applicant "matched" if he/she lists only one program type on his/her certified rank order list. Applicants who receive this message will not have access to the Dynamic List of Unfilled Programs that is posted on Tuesday of Match Week.
2. Congratulations, you have matched to an advanced position but not a first year position!
This message will be displayed for any applicant who matched to an advanced position but did not match to a preliminary position listed on a supplemental rank order list. Applicants who receive this message will have access to the Dynamic List of Unfilled Programs and are eligible to participate in the post-Match Scramble for unfilled positions to obtain a preliminary position; however, applicants may not use the Scramble to obtain a categorical position or a different advanced position.
3. Congratulations, you have matched to a one- year position!
This message will be displayed for any applicant who matched to a preliminary position but did not match to an advanced position listed on the primary rank order list. Applicants who receive this message will have access to the Dynamic List of Unfilled Programs and are eligible to participate in the post-match Scramble for unfilled positions to obtain an advanced position; however, applicants may not use the Scramble to obtain a categorical position or a different preliminary position.
4. We are sorry, you did not match to any position.
This message will be displayed for any applicant who did not match to a program listed on either the primary or supplemental rank order list. For applicants participating as a partner of a couple, this statement also may be displayed if the applicant listed the 999999999 program code on the primary rank order list to indicate "No Match". Applicants who receive this message will have access to the Dynamic List of Unfilled Programs and are eligible to participate in the post-Match Scramble for any category of unfilled positions.
5. You are NOT matched because you did not submit a certified rank order list.
This message will be displayed for any applicant who registered to participate in the Match but did not certify a rank order list prior to the rank order list certification deadline. Applicants who receive this message will have access to the Dynamic List of Unfilled Programs and are eligible to participate in the post-Match Scramble for any category of unfilled positions.
6. You are NOT matched because you are withdrawn.
This message will be displayed for any applicant who registered to participate in the Match but was withdrawn either by the medical school or by the NRMP. Applicants who were withdrawn by the NRMP because they obtained positions through another matching service will not have access to the Dynamic List of Unfilled Programs. Other withdrawn applicants (including those whose ECFMG status is Not Verified ) will have access to the list.

Thanks for the link, I read it and that's why I'm asking.

Option #1 will be displayed if you're fully matched (into categorical and/or advanced). However, I ranked categorical AND prelims in my primary list. The explanation refers to applicants who ONLY included prelims (apparently).

It seems like the "matched" status applies to those who only applied to one program type, right?

Can anyone shed some light on this?

The fully "matched" status applies to anyone who matches into the maximum position possible. So if you only applied prelim and therefore matched prelim, you're fully matched, because you couldn't match into anything more than that. Same for only advanced or only categorical. If you applied to both prelim and advanced, and you only get one or the other, then you're not "fully matched", so you'll get message number 2 or 3.

I actually don't know for sure how your situation works - obviously if you get a categorical position, you'll get message number 1, but I think you probably would as well even if you only matched prelim, because it's not as if you failed to fully match by not matching to an advanced program - because you didn't try to match to an advanced program since you didn't rank any. Without ranking any advanced programs, that implies that you weren't looking for an advanced program anyways and therefore wouldn't need to scramble if you got prelim only (the same as if you only ranked prelims without any categoricals being included); so I think you'll be considered "fully matched" and therefore not have access to the scramble list. Because option number 3 says: "This message will be displayed for any applicant who matched to a preliminary position but did not match to an advanced position listed on the primary rank order list," and you didn't list any advanced programs on your primary rank list. But I might be totally off base here in my thinking though.

Wrong. It's not that difficult.

If you matched into a complete training program (such as integrated PRS or Cat Gen Surg) you get message 1. If you match into a prelim only, you get message #3.

I came to the same conclusion at the beginning. However, I think they meant prelim programs that are listed on the supplemental lists (not primary ROL).

Nope. They know what a prelim program is...it doesn't matter where it is on your list (primary or supp). Even if all you rank on your primary list are prelim programs and you match, you'll get message 3.

Except this states that if all you rank are prelims, you're considered "fully" matched and you therefore get message #1:

You were right gutonc! NRMP sent me a note clarifying:

C - Categorical program = "Congratulations, you have matched!" -This
is a full program.

A -Advanced program PLUS the prelim from the supplemental list =
"Congratulations, you have matched!".

A- Advanced program ONLY = "Congratulations, you have matched to an advanced
position but not a first year position!".

P = Preliminary program only from the Primary list= "Congratulations you
have matched to a one-year position".
 
How responsive is the NRMP at this point? I got a burning question to ask them, but I figure they are buried under a mountain of emails :laugh:

What do offered positions mean in the document sent by aPD? It is certainly not the number of total positions. Is it? The numbers seemed too low. Example, Derm 31 total offered positions??? really?

Scroll down. You are looking at pgy-1, not advanced/pgy2, positions.

Those 31 Derm positions were for PGY-1 positions available. If you look further down the page, you'll see that there were 329 PGY-2 positions offered for Derm. So I'm pretty sure that offered positions really does mean the number of total positions.
