Hi,
I just finished the Boston University GMS program (a special masters program) for those students that already took the premed requirements and didn't do well in them. My undergrad gpa was a 3.1 and my BCPM gpa was like a 2.9. With those stats I knew I wouldn't get into med school so I did the BU program and I can honestly say it has made all the difference in the world. You take med school courses with the BU medical students and are graded against them A, B, C, etc. I'm going to an allopathic med school next year that was my second choice. The program can be done in 1 year or 2. I did it in 2 cause I hadn't taken the MCATs yet so I needed time to do that.
Another benefit of the program is that it makes the biology part of the BIOL/ORGO section of the MCAT a joke. I can't even convey how much it helped.
Another pro is that it will make your first year of medical school easier wherever you go. Histo? Biochem? Physio? You've already taken them along with a few other first year courses.
But there are also a lot of cons. I'm too lazy to list them here but there are a bunch. PM me if you want to hear my long tirade but basically I'm grateful. GMS gave me a second chance at my dream.
Oh and another caveat. If you do this program you need to do well. Not like a 3.3 or a 3.4, you should be 3.6 or 3.7
at least. If you sort of take it easy in GMS and apply to med school that is a big black mark. The SMPs offer you a second chance. Don't blow it. Hope this helps. Good Luck!
