I would be a working and practicing Psychiatric resident in Ireland and my husband and I plan to transfer to ON by the end of 2014. He would be a non-medic. From the information I've been gathering and a few discussions on here, Canada seems pretty tough when it comes to placements and job opportunities for IMGs. Unfortunately my training is not recognized in Canada therefore I would have the following options:

1. Work in a job in allegiance with Psychiatry
2. Go through Carms and start again
3. Have babies and forget working as a doctor.

I truly love parts of Psychiatry but not too keen to be a Consultant Psychiatrist as yet. I would rather work outside of hospital medicine with skill.

I've come to the board to ask a few questions:

1. Would there be jobs which are available to someone with international experience?

I've looked at the Carms route and the idea of ROS (return of service) looks like a trap.

2. How many years would you have to return services and where would you be transferred? My husband would need to be based in a big city due to his profession and living away from each other would be a disaster. So this possibly wouldn't be the first option we'd take.

Why we're not choosing to remain in Ireland? Well for personal reasons and because we feel our children would benefit from a more international environment. Ireland is very slow on accepting immigrants and it has been a challenge for my husband even though he would be branded as 'Caucasian.'

Has anyone any thoughts on the above? We want to move in a year's time or so but job prospects and options are what we're debating over for me...

Thanks guys

If by then you are fully certified to practice psychiatry by the Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK) e.g. you've finished your residency and passed your boards (or whatever it is you have to do), then you have training from an "acceptable jurisdiction".

This is a good thing.

It means that you can likely find a job as a psychiatrist (I understand that many jurisdictions are hurting for psychiatrists in Canada). There is likely a community somewhere that is willing to hire an IMG psychiatrist. They might, however, require you to have your LMCC exams. Typically, you would be required to pass your Canadian Royal College exams within a few years of being hired.

Contact the recruiters in Ontario for more information: https://www.hfojobs.ca/Default.aspx?langID=1

On the other hand, if you haven't finished residency / aren't certified there isn't much that you can do. Canada isn't like the US where you can have a sort of general practice in some places after a year of basic residency training - everything requires completion of residency / certification exams.

If you wished to / were able to find a CaRMS spot (and it's very challenging), the usual ROS contact is 1 year of ROS for each year of training (so for a specialty, 5 years). It does vary province to province, though.
