Hello,

Does anyone have experience taking Biochemistry, Immunology, or Genetics online? Specifically does anyone have any experience taking it from Berkeley California? How did you rank the course in difficulty, amount learned, and was it hard to take online for any reason?
I am considering taking them to satisfy pre-req requirements and yes my school does accept online courses.

I searched around the forums and couldn't ever find what I was looking for, I just found discussion over whether or not the schools would accept online courses. Please forgive me if this has been asked a million times.

Thanks!

Hi,
I am not familiar with Berkeley's program, though I have heard of it (sorry). I've taken some classes online through University of New England, and they have Biochemistry, Orgo I and II online, General Bio I, Gen Chem I and II, and Human Physiology I all online.. From my experience, I have taken the Orgo I and II courses and they were pretty difficult. I neede to update my grades in these coruses since I took them almost 10 years ago, so the schools I have contacted DOES take online pre-requisites, so it is cool.

You have to have a lot of discipline and stay in constant contact with your professor as you have questions...The exams are proctored (i.e., you have to take them at an approved site in your local town), and then the proctor sends your exams to your teacher to grade.

I say go for it, no matter what the difficulty...Some people may take online courses because they cannot go to school full-time to fulfill prereqs, may work full-time, etc. I say do what you need to do to fulfill your goal, and you've done the right thing by asking the institutions you are interested in, so you are ahead of the game...

How's the tuition for the Berkeley program? I thought it was expensive when I was looking for online courses, but it may have changed...

Do not take online science courses. The majority of pharmacy schools does not accept them.

I'm not going to get into a debate over this, but that statement is incorrect. Plenty of schools accept online courses. First off they don't even know that they were done online unless you tell them, so I say go for it I've done General Chemistry I, Biology I and Microbiology online with no problems. When you get your transcripts, there's no distinction between in class or online.

All the schools I applied to said they do not accept online science courses. Also you are required to report if the course was taken online. When you fill in your PharmCAS, you are supposed to select "Distance Learning" as the course type. It is not hard for schools to tell that a course was taken online, even if you lie by omission.

I agree 100%, but for a different reason. I took one pre-req online, and it was my only B and it is the course from which I retained the least. DO NOT take an important class like Biochem this way! DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!

Distance learning and online classes are two different things. I took some distance learning classes while in the military and they are usually from schools that are not accredited. Online classes are considered regular classes since they were taken at an accredited university. Do a search online for distance learning and you will see the difference.

Everyone learns differently. Like I said earlier I've taken sciences classes online and I have retained the information, meaning I'm not having any problems with the classes that build on prior information so I feel that I'm retaining very well. It's your personal decision to take classes online, I could care less what a forum thinks...PEACE

Hi, Are you sure the transcript won't saying it's on line course?

I did check my transcrip, it didn't specify on line courses. I do have problems attending schools in fall with a full time job. It would be nice if I can take on line science courses. The school I am going to apply for is UOP, which doesn't accept on line courses.

Contact the school and check, but for the most part, I have been taking classes online for a while now and they always show up as a regular class their is no online distinction among any of my classes.

The transcript does not say online, however you will have to list the course as distance learning on the Pharmcas application.

I don't know if my situation is slightly different since I did take most of my pre-reqs before, I just needed to update the grades to demonstrate current proficiency, so I don't know if the reason why some schools i contacted said they WOULD accept the online courses.

I totally disagree about the retention of info...I feel it totally helped me in understanding the concepts better for the PCAT and other things...Also, it's a great opportunity if you do have other responsibilities and CANNOT afford to quit a full-time job to go to school to fulfill pre-reqs during the day or in the evening...Always check with the school first...

what college are you taking online classes?
I need a gen chem -2 class

University of New England has a Gen Chem II class...Check out their website, or do a google search--University of New England, Distance Education...

Are you sure you ask the right question ? They said they would accept online course but does that imply that they also accept science courses with a heavy lab compoment such as gen chem/old chem? Most school accept online courses as long as its not in the list of prereq or the course is a non science or the course does not have a lab component with it.

YES--I told them the courses I had labs already completed in, and the classes that needed updates. I even explained to them that my undergraduate institution gives a separate lab grade, so I didn't necessarily need to repeat that since it has less credit hours, but needed to do the lecture-only portion of the class, and they were fine with this.

Believe me, I was very explicit with my situation, and explained it to a tee. I don't want to waste my money enrolling in classes, so I might as well ask the right questions, right? That would be pretty messed up if I didn't explain WHICH classes I was taking online, all to learn that it would not be accepted.

By the way, the school that said they WOULD NOT take the classes online was Midwestern in Chicago. Other schools I contacted (UMKC, SIUE, etc) stated this was fine....

Also, check University of Georgia's website under frequently asked questions and they also state they take online courses as well as AP, CLEP, etc...

I took organic 1 & 2, biochem, economics and (currently) physiology online through Athabasca University, and so far my grades have been solid. I don't know about Berkeley, but the tuition for these courses is reasonable, and you do it in your own time, up to 6 months. And Colorado as well as Oklahoma & UMKC recognized the courses & the grades, so there was no problem there.

Thanks for the info. I did check with UMKC before, and yes they said they would accept online pre-reqs...I still think it's a great way to reach your goal...
