I'm seriously considering changing my major as well as my school for various reasons to University of Florida's online BS Microbiology. As a non-traditional pre-med student there are various reasons why I want to switch schools and go to an online program but mainly so that I can attend virtual lecture and do my work on my own schedule because I'm finishing up my paramedic program and need time for not only clinicals but other things. This is not to say I don't have time for my prereq's or undergraduate classes, I just need the schedule to be flexible for everything else I'm doing.

With that said, I've read a lot of negative things about online classes and online schools but I would think that this program I'm looking at is essentially exactly the same as if I was at UF's main campus. All classes are taught by the same faculty, every lecture is video recorded and posted online, and every lab is at a regional campus. I've never heard of anything like this program before and it seems really cool.

Info on it here: http://microbiology.ifas.ufl.edu/

____________

My question is: Those who know, would an online program like this hinder my chances in any way or look bad for some reason even with the fact that all labs are on campus?

Changing from Biology major to Microbiology, anything I should know or may have not considered?

Any other input is appreciated 😀

online courses are indeed looked down upon. try hard to stay away from those. which major you pick? make sure you like it because you're in it for however many years you have left in college.

I imagine childdler is right in that online classes are looked down upon, though I never took any and didn't ask so I won't say for certain. You could call the admissions people at a couple medical schools you're interested in and ask them if they put online classes on the same or a different level as physical classes.

How will medical schools know this particular program was online if I don't volunteer the information? The labs are in person at regional campuses and exams are proctored the same way.

This is from UF's Microbiology website:

Learning Online
Students enrolled in the Off-Campus Microbiology and Cell Science Program are taught by the same outstanding faculty as UF's on-campus students. Live lectures on campus are delivered over the Internet via streaming audio, video, and PowerPoint slides allowing participating students to feel like they're a part of our campus community and classrooms

What will my degree look like?
Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Science requirements, you will receive a degree from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the University of Florida. Your degree will not indicate that you attended an online program, and you will be able to walk at commencement in Gainesville if you wish. Otherwise, your degree will be mailed to you.

My prereq's are/will be completed in person at the school I'm at now.

Is this online version of UF's micro program really different than on campus?

I just took MCB3020 this past summer and the lectures were all online, though we still had office hours and exams on campus. I assume you'd be watching the same lectures by Dr. Asghari that I had. The testing wouldn't be that different either as we brought our laptops to take the test online through Sakai in an administered room.

Cool man, how did you like it overall? Was the online lecture good?

The class isn't that bad as long as you put time into it. The teacher is somewhat disorganized and you have to write down everything he talks about on the lecture as its not all on the PowerPoint. Overall, not too hard though, I got an A.

What's important is how the class is listed on your transcript.

If it is listed as an online course when you send them to AACOMAS, don't bother. The bias is strong and many times it won't be counted.

But if it's listed like any other course, then you're golden.

I know that this thread is old but did the OP go with the online degree and if so, did you or have you run into any problems with applying to med school? I am considering this program as well. I work full time and the classes I need to complete my current degree aren't offered in the evening. Thanks for any response.

I am in this distance micro program and I absolutely love it. They use proctorU for exams for the distance students but also for the regular students as well now. All the lectures are recorded live and you have access to them as much as you want. It's a great program and provides you with the flexibility if you are a nontrad and work during the day or have a family. The advisor is very prompt at answering emails and registering for classes is very simple. The options for electives are pretty good as well. Feel free to pm me if you want.

If they cannot tell it was taken online, it shouldn't matter. IMO, the lecture part shouldn't matter at all---you're in class or you're online, who cares if you're getting the same lecture? You're getting to do the lab on campus, which I think is important. Microbiology lab is so fun and has so many things you can do I can't imagine doing that online. (FWIW-I took an immunohematology class online because I had to but I only took the lecture, which was the exact same lecture they gave to the students on campus so why that kind of stuff should ever matter is beyond me.)
