Hello,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, so please forgive me if it isn't. I'm stuck taking nothing but social sciences and the like for the next two terms until I can go to a 4 year (took too many science courses so I am behind for my transfer degree). I'd kind of like to get a jump on some chemistry, so I am looking for some online chemistry classes. I checked UC Berkely, but all I can find is Biochemistry...does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

This is definitely the right forum, but I'm confused by your question. Are you taking courses at a community college prior to transfer? If so, how do you have "too many" science classes? I took classes at a community college four years ago, and I ended up with 78 credits...all sciences except history, sociology, and speech...that transferred to SUNY. There's no reason you shouldn't be allowed to take chemistry. Can you explain your situation further?

Well, I am currently attending a community college and working on a transfer degree that will put me at junior status at the 4 year I will be attending. This degree requires a certain distribution of credits. 12 in A&L, 15 in SS (no more than 9 from any one discipline), etc. I've been taking a lot of science, more than is required for the transfer degree, and slacking on my SS and A&L. We're on the quarter system, by the way.

In this area (Oregon) all the colleges start all their 200 level biology, chemistry, physics, etc courses in the fall. By 200, I mean the level generally recommended to fufill medical school pre-reqs. I cannot join in Winter or Spring. So, in order to take my pre-reqs at a four year, I have to start there in the Fall. I also can't take them at my CC, because I missed starting any of them this quarter.

Granted, I don't have to get the transfer degree to go there (I have 62cr right now, and will have over 90 by the end of Spring quarter), but if I do, it will keep me from having to do a lot of sophomore level "exploratory" courses that look quite tedious.

I'll have to do around 15 credits in Winter and then in Spring to meet the transfer degree requirements, all consisting of A&L and SS. I would just like to be able to add an online chemistry or biology course. The non-science courses don't really require me to invest a lot of time.

Hi. The Univ of New England College of Ostheopathic Medicine offers distance learning courses in chemistry and biology with labs. http://www.une.edu/com/online/index.cfm The chemistry labs are done using at home lab kits with chemicals. You can start this course anytime and it is self paced so if you have time constraints with your other courses.

Those look perfect...except they're out of my price ranger. =/ Thanks, though. I'd love to do those if I could.

From their website, it looks like it is about $8,000-$10,000 for 24 semester hours: Bio 1 & 2, General Chemistry 1 & 2, Organic Chemistry 1 & 2, all with labs. (I wonder why they don't offer physics). It's not as inexpensive as a community college, but it's not bad.

It costs about the same as in-state tuition at a 4-year state university in my city (Cleveland State University).
