Online learning

Hello,

I have a couple of classes that I want to retake, but the best option for me is online learning (not lab courses). UC Berkeley offers great looking distance education courses. How will this look on my application?

Most schools will not list the schools as "on line" or distance learning" on your transcript. You should give Berkeley a call but I did not see anyone having problems with this when I searched the topic last year. You may want to call a few DO schools and see what they say.

UNECOM offers a biochem class online to fulfill their biochem requirement, not sure on their policy.

I think UC Berkeley's online natural sciences courses--prefixed by a "X," rather than a "XB"--are introductory and geared mainly for pre-allied health professionals and nurses. Based on the courses' outlines, they look to be less comprehensive than what would be expected from the traditional pre-medical courses. But, if the medical schools you're planning on applying to will accept them as meeting the prerequisite requirements and your undergraduate college will accept them, then go for it. The tuition is about right--around $220/unit--and you can take the courses at your own pace. Heck, you can even take the courses for a Pass/No Pass grade in order to protect your GPA. While I'm not sure about UC Berkeley online continuing education department, I know from experiences at other UC campuses that continuing education transcripts are different and are not from the registrar. Let us know what you find out.

Be careful because a couple of schools I talked to said no way to any online courses. Even if the transcripts look the same they will be able to tell they were online unless you happen to live in SF.

I took 2 online A&P classes through a CC. They counted in my ACOMAS GPA. The transcript from the college listed the class as if it was taken on campus, it just said, "Anatomy & Physiology I" and "Anatomy & Physiology II". All schools accepted it. They were each 4 credits and had a CD-ROM interactive lab component that was actually kind of cool. I admit that you don't learn much from online science classes (at least A & P) because you don't have to study (all exams were essay format and online).
