med school admittance is hard - there is lots of competition. The reason everyone recommends applying to so many schools is an II nor acceptance is guaranteed at ANY school for ANY applicant. 3 IIs is pretty good for an average applicant!

How many schools did you apply to?
Geographically speaking, how broadly?
Did you have a good reason for medicine (who said your PS was good)?
Did you have good secondary responses?
Did you have red flags (criminal record, IA)?

There are many reasons you only got 3 interviews OP...

Agree with @gyngyn that three isn't a bad haul. The highlight of what you shared is your GPA. A 31 MCAT is average for matriculants, and the 8 VR is borderline dicey. The volunteering and research sound pretty blah. Was the teaching like TA teaching or TFA teaching? The latter would be far more valuable.

Honestly, you were a pretty average applicant. Schools need to wade through copious piles of average applicants in the hopes that some of the average applicants on paper are not so average in real life.

2 years teaching is quite interesting but other than that I don't think you have a hook. 31/3.9 is good, but is right about Average for accepted students. If you had a 35+ I think I'd be shocked to see only 3 II. Unless you applied to 25-30 schools I think you got an appropriate amount of invites.

Respectfully, you should be super happy you even got 3 with just those experiences. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of applicants who would be looking at that like "wow, I can't believe I got 3. Very lucky!"

I applied to 22 schools! Thanks for everyone responding!

What about 22 schools?

3 interviews is not bad.
Thanks for responding! Puts my neuroticism at ease for a bit! Hopefully those interviews turn into acceptances or I gotta stay in music!

The problem is you expected more interviews for the competitiveness of your app. The only other thing you could have done is been more realistic.

3 interviews for 22 schools is really good i have to say, plenty apply to more schools and receive fewer IIs.

Congrats~ hope you get in

I applied to 30 schools, and received 3 II. My stats are similar to yours.

3/22 isn't bad in my opinion for an average applicant. Even if you're a great fit for a school and meet their stats, it is often still hard to get an interview.

I would say super great applicants with amazing ECs and good stats usually don't get more than 40% II/Schools. Yes there are some people who break 40-50% but those people are incredibly rare. Ex. Think URM with 36, 3.9, great ECs and publications.

On the low end, (assuming average good applicant with average stats)I've seen some qualified candidates get around 10% II/Schools

My made up personal statistics/opinion is that most average/good (Lizzy M of 70 +/- 2 and good ECs) candidates get between 15-30% II/Schools. I could be way off, but that seems to align with what I've seen on SDN and real life.

I sincerely hope it works out for you!

Last year I applied to 45 schools. I had a few pubs that were in press during the cycle, 34 MCAT on a retake (30 first time), 3.5 GPA, good work experience volunteer, etc.

I got interviews at about 7-8 schools. I think your run was pretty typical.

It's because you're a Canadian applicant, Drake!!!! You know about Canada and their VR scores!

On a serious note, I had a ~3.8, 32 and got 5. I was pretty stoked with that.
