Hi all, I am from mass and went to school in NY, (3.71c, 3.75c gpa, 33r mcat) and am wondering what the OOS friendliness of the suny schools.

I looked at other threads but there seem to be few that are recent (a good one from 2005 but that was 7 years ago). Should I consider these schools? and if so, is there one that is particularly friendly towards OOS?

Thanks in advance,

check the msar, they have stats for in state and out of state matriculants

Many of the SUNY schools are out of state friendly. I'd look at Stony Brook and Downstate first.

stony brook only took 24/124 OOS students last year, would you say that is friendly?

20% of the class is about as friendly as SUNYs get. This is on par with most state-funded medical schools, with some exceptions (OSU, etc.). I'd add SUNY Buffalo, too.

Hm that is interesting to know, Maybe I will add Stony brook to my list after all

SUNY's are not very OOS friendly. They are boarder-line "strict" about it (the schools that are very strict about OOS are the UMDNJ schools, where they accepted 30 out of staters out of 350+ total acceptances). Downstate and Stony have 20% OOS which is pretty low. Buffalo has even less (at around 10-15%). As a reference, Penn State has 40+% acceptance for OOS (more than double that of Downstate and Stonybrook - in other words, you can just pay for one app and apply to Penn state, and your chances will be equal to that if you applied to Downstate and SB). Another reference would be Ohio State where the majority (about 55%) were OOS.

So in the spectrum of state schools, SUNY's are not as Nazi about it as some (California, New Jersey, Connecticut, etc...) but they are pretty close up there.

In my opinion, unless you have close ties to NYC or really want to live here and you are able to somehow convey that, then don't apply. I know for a fact that Downstate has a secondary essay about "why ny? why downstate? why brooklyn?"

As for Stony Brook, you're all right. It is about a 1.5 - 2 hour drive away from Manhattan. NYC is ridiculously big, and there is much more to the "city' than just Manhattan btw.
