Any school's that let you switch from OOS tuition to IS tuition after the first year? Been trying to find a comprehensive list somewhere...

Obviously any school that does this would be my top choice lol!

I think this will probably be quite individualized. Hopefully, someone can prove me wrong and there will be a comprehensive list out there somewhere. It seems like it would be dependent on your acceptance terms and stuff, though.

Unless I am mistaken, the Texas schools do not offer this.

Thanks for your input! I need to just accept the fact I'll be living with 250,000 + debt 😀

I know a lot of the Texas schools will drop you to IS tuition as a "scholarship" if they want you here bad enough. Our averages are lower than a lot of other schools, so it doesn't take super high (aka 38 MCAT and 4.0) to look like an allstar. Considering applying to TMDSAS schools if you're really looking for lower tuition. You can always talk to financial aid about options to get your tuition down to IS, they are very helpful (at least here they are).

Also, if you acquire Texas residency (which you can by buying property in Texas and owning it for a year), you can get IS tuition after a year 🙂 This is a pretty big difference in tuition at Baylor as well, as even though it's a private school it accepts some state funding.

Oh wow I didn't know that about Texas! Love the state as well!

One question for you Texas guys-

Do they take out of staters? Probably too late for me to apply right now, but I'm just curious now.

3.98, balanced 30 mcat, Alaska resident. Worth filling out the TMDAS or whatever its called or would that just be dumb? I applied to 29 AMCAS schools already😳

At this stage, it might not be terribly high-yield. Texas schools kick their interview season off early (I believe one school did their first round the second to last weekend in July, and then the rest started up at the start of August) and end it early (usually end of December or mid-January). The absolute deadline to fill out the TMDSAS is October 1, so you're really pretty late, unfortunately; they might be out of interview slots by the time they even read your application. You might think of adding Baylor, though.

Won't Baylor laugh at me with my 30 mcat though? 😛

PS: I am not a URM if that matters

 Our average MCAT this year was something like a 33.7; so by definition, about half of the people in our class must have an MCAT lower than that. Your GPA is much higher than our average, obviously. I mean, you're going to need to have some nice strong points to your application outside of your stats, but they won't auto-reject you for a 30.

Umm....they aren't nearly as numbers-oriented as some schools that are considered "on-par, if you will" with them. You have a great GPA and your MCAT is just below average for them. I think it would be worth a shot.

Actually, this probably hold true for about every states, not just Texas. If you buy a property in your name, you will be a residence after 1 year. I know for sure in California and Virginia.

I mean, don't get me wrong--you're odds of getting accepted at any ONE given school is always relatively low, that's just the way this game goes. But Baylor isn't going to just throw your application for a 30; that's still a good enough score to get a look. BTW, to answer your earlier question, Baylor tends to accept about 70% IS/30% OOS, and the other Texas schools at about 90/10

Thank you Mom and Dad, for having me in this state. 👍

I'm going to throw my app at Baylor just for fun.😛 I love Houston and their tuition price is awesome considering it's a top school.

Thanks for the help guys!!

Besides, I need to get out of this freakin' cold up here in Alaska. It's painful!

Good luck!

Just because you can gain state residency doesn't mean your tuition will switch after a year. For Colorado, once you're labeled OOS, you're OOS for all four years. In fact, you have to be present in the state for a year before you're accepted, not before you matriculate.

SC will switch your residency after a year, but you have to have strong ties to the state before they'll look at your application anyway.
