Ohio State has open house May 21st. I was planning to go, but it is 9 AM to 4 PM and I know I will have orphaned wildlife to care for. I live 3 hours from OSU so I'd be gone from 6 AM to 7 PM and my babies can't go that long without eating. I could possibly work something out with Ohio Wildlife Center which is nearby to leave them there and stop by at lunch or something to feed them, but that is gonna be a major hassle and take up at least an hour and a half and my guess is lunch isn't that long.

My main question is how important do you think going to an open house is? It will be a major feat to be able to go and plus it is a Saturday and I just started my job as a vet assistant and I work Saturday and Sunday and don't have vacation time. I could probably get the day off, though.

If you go to open house, do you have to stay from 9-4 or is it set up so you can come and take a tour anytime that day and just kinda walk through.

I have never been to a college open house or taken a tour of any college, how weird is that? Everyone always goes looking at colleges to see where they want to go, but I went Post secondary so the choice was made because I had to go to the closest school and since I finished 3 years in my last 2 years of high school and only had one year to go, I stayed at that college. So, never been to any college other than the local 4 year college and the community college. And both schools are small.

I have seen Ohio State before, though, we did a little tour on our 7th grade school trip called the Ohio tour. All I remember is that the place was HUGE!

Do you guys think I should make the effort (it will be a major effort and pain in the butt to get all the creatures loaded up in the car and then unloaded at the wildlife center since I usually have 20+ babies (squirrels, opossums, cottontails, songbirds, groundhogs, you name it 🙂 plus if I have tiny opossum babies, they will need to be fed every 3 hours, so I'd have to leave a lot)? I am hoping to get into Ohio State, it is my number 1 choice. I don't think anything could change my opinion other than if everyone was jerks (which I am guessing even if they were they wouldn't act like it at open house). I am not much of a scenery person, don't care what the buildings look like, and I already know how the weather is.

O.k. without knowing you at all I am going to assume you are applying this year. I think open house is up to you really. From what I gather, my first one at Mizzou is tomorrow, it's more fun than anything. There is an informational "How to Get In" type seminar though. So if you think you've got it with grades and you know what you are doing as far as your applications and such, I wouldn't worry about it too much, there is always email if you have question later. However...you won't get a chance to put a face to a name before they start looking at apps for interviews.

So its really up to you. Your babies are really important but maybe its worth the hassle and maybe they'll be o.k. without you while you go? Its totally up to you but I don't think its going to make or break you either way.

(Wow, I think my split personalities are battling eachother in this post!) 🙂

It isn't the be-all end-all if you can't make it, and it sounds like you can't make it. I know how feeding babies is and it's just not feasible if you need to be feeding every hour (especially with those baby birds!) My suggestion is to try and schedule a tour there some other time where you can schedule better or when you have less of an animal load.

I'm originally from Ohio and was excepted to Kansas State CVM last spring (I'm a current 1st year). There was no way I was going to make the trip to Kansas for a 1 day open house after making the 16 hour drive out for my interview plus making a second trip in May to look for housing. I certainly do not feels as if I missed out by not attending the open house. Orientation in the fall was a sufficient introduction.

Eh. I would say stick with the babies. You know you want to go there, so I wouldn't worry too much about missing it! You can always find another day to drive there and even possibly set up a tour with someone to get acquainted with the campus.

I went to the open house last year at OSU because I had never been to the vet campus and wanted to take a look around. The majority of people attending seemed to be traditional students, and actually, quite a few had their parents with them. The day wasn't structured so that everyone did the same thing. They gave you a schedule of what presentations would be going on in what rooms at what times. You got to pick what you wanted to do. So, obviously, you can leave whenever you want to. I think I was done seeing what I wanted to see by 1 or 2. When you arrive, you sign up for what time you want to go on a hospital tour. I got there at 8am, not realizing that it didn't start till 9. It was a good thing though, because I didn't have to wait in the huge line that developed to get my tour time. If you do go, get there early or you will be waiting for a long time! I did my tour right away, which left all day to plan out what I wanted to do. I think that if it is going to be a significant hassle for you to go, it would be ok to miss. Many of the questions you have can be answered by their website or asked on here and one of us can answer it for you. OSU also gives student-led tours of the hospital M-F at noon. You can call the school and schedule a tour on a day during the week that will work better for you. Actually, the info sessions during the day of your interview is quite similar in regards to the presentations given (granted you will have to wait until Dec for that.) For me, I knew I wanted to go to vet school, and that I wanted to go to OSU. I think the day might be more designed for people who are questioning if they want to be a vet, and/or if they want to go to OSU.
