Hi all, hope this is a better spot than match/residency forum since this might be more relevant to us. I finished 3 years of residency but left for personal and health reasons 3 years ago. Now looking to get back and try to finish, does anyone have advice on residentswap.org or findaresident.com? How useful are they or should I just start emailing programs?

For practicing paths, what are your opinions on my chances of restarting or should I just settle for doing pathology assistant work. I have been doing that for a year and the money is decent but would like to not feel as if I wasted several years of medical school. I am an IMG, Green card, and passed USMLE 1, 2, and 3 so ECFMG certified indefinitely.

Call, email programs. Do everything you can. Tell them your story and see if someone will give you the spot.

I agree with that and would add start with the program you left...

If it was not under bad terms, they might be the most likely to take you..

People from other programs are going to want to talk to people at your last program anyways... (references)

Hi all, first off thank you for all of the help and advice. Pathologic, thanks for the lead. I am trying every option right now. Unfortunately my PD was not very supportive when I left (forced out by him and his sidekick) and I think he is blocking my attempts to get back into residency. I even asked for my 3rd year evals to see what I could do better, nothing, no comment, no email, no returned phone calls. Because they have no proof, my rise and evals were all average or above average. I was not a superstar nor was I a bottom feeder. No mistakes, no probation or clinical errors. Just the dreaded, you are not a good fit, better to leave.

I contacted a few places, over the phone they seemed interested and asked me to send in my materials which I did immediately. next day, "sorry we cannot offer an interview", no explanation or anything like that. Not sure what to do next. Not sure if it is any consolation but I have spoken to several other residents IMG and AMG in other specialties that felt they were forced out the same way.

Anyway, doing my best since there are always 3 sides to any story, my side, the PDs side, and the truth.

If that's true you may need a good lawyer. You should be able to get all your records and findout what he is saying. In most states it's illegal to give a negative recommendation. You can only say whether or not you would rehire the person.

Sorry to hear about your situation. Anyways, any program that would be willing to pick you up will most likely call your former program to ask about you. In that case, anything said by the PD/Chair of your program may hold more weight than what you have to say (unfortunately). You have to be careful of this as it may screw up your chances at any program.

In most states it's illegal to give a negative recommendation.

What? I've never heard of this. Why would it be illegal? If that is the case then you cannot put any stock in recommendations.

thanks kp, I have been paying attention to, I am definity not bad mouthing my old PD or program, just telling them what I think the misconceptions were, what I have learned and what I took away from teh experience. On the other hand I am definitely not telling them I got let go because of insufficient knowledge or clinical errors since I got no written notice of medical errors or lack of knowledge.

Got one interview where I was given a chance to explain and they seemed to understand. Problem was they did not have opening, 3rd year had not passed step 3 and they were preparing just in case he did not pass. Guess he finally passed but was good to finally talk to someone about my situation openly.

If you left for personal health reasons, then it is pretty cruel that they would prevent you from getting back into a residency, any residency.

My case had nothing to do with HR, I resigned? I am now really mad and now want to know what they are telling people. My issues had nothing to do with HR, no behavior or clinical errors, or screaming or attacking collegues. I really am now wondering if PDs do have unlimited power in their hospitals.

Call your program's graduate medical education office... they should keep all evals...
plus they seem like they are going to be more helpful than your PD...
