Just found out about an open spot at Indiana, unfortunately it filled on Monday,

but I am just wondering as a future applicant, is this truly a forthcoming derm applicant community?

maybe I am just a sucker, and maybe I am naive, but I would've at least expected someone to mention this on the dermatology forum.....

Of course this isn't a forthcoming derm applicant community. People here tend to have agendas. Very few people have anybody's interests in mind other than their own, and I can't blame anybody for things being that way.

Look at it this way: you don't match but then you happen to hear about an open position at a good program like Indiana. Are YOU going to post it on dermboard so that all the other 250+, AOA/nearly AOA, AWESOME people who don't match can beat you to it and rip that chance away from you? I'm sorry, but I don't blame ANYBODY for playing the open-spot card close to the vest. I would do the same thing had I not matched.

You can't honestly expect people to post that far and wide, can you?

I just figured derm was competitive because there are only 300 odd spots, and all 1200 people applying are wickedly qualified to fill them all,

Even those that dont make the cutoffs, I am sure they have applied and reapplied after making up for it with research, fellowships, PhD's etcetera

I didnt think it was cuthroat because of the actual people themselves, I guess I am naive, I mean I always considered myself competitive with my class, but not at the expense of alienating anyone or having been a jerk!

I hate to gendrify it too, but I also thought since an overwhelming majoriity of applicants and acceptees are females, that the crazy nut-job surgeon types who stab their best friends in the back wouldnt be part of this bunch,

I was wrong, and I guess im pretty dumb for being so naive!

Don't blame the pool of applicants. A lot of people don't know about these random open spots. Those applicants who find out about these out-of-match positions are typically those who happen to be close to PDs or chairs, AND whose PD/chair buddies are close to the powers-that-be in the program with the random open spot.

How did YOU know about the Indiana spot? Even the average resident wouldn't know about these things unless they were specifically digging for info or happen to have the inside track.

I guess I just don't think it's alienating or being a jerk to find out about an open position and try to get it without advertising it to the world. This is a tough gig, and I don't blame anybody trying to get an upper hand by not telling the world about an open spot.

Agree with Dermguy. If anything, I'd say the blame rests with the PDs and chairs who are not doing a good job advertising. In truth, they are angling to get the best out-of-match applicant and to do so, they rely on word-of-mouth and recommendations culled from their faculty friends. Better that than be swamped with hundreds of resumes of varying quality.

Again, don't blame the applicants. I doubt you would behave any differently than your colleagues if you had plum insider information -- you are part of the derm applicant pool as well.

I thought both of Indiana's positions matched this match. One went to SDN's N-Surge.
Did someone quit? Did the program grow? Anybody know what happened?
😕😕

I found out the day I got back from vacation when the fellow I do research with was gone for two days, I asked and I got answers,

I am not applying this year, I just figured open spots would have been put up on this board somewhere,

I think Indiana has 3 spots available now because they are trying to start a research program?

Seriously? Seriously? Does somebody REALLY think it was the least bit wrong to not post a spot you are competing for? Shocking.

I am not judging the action as to whether or not it was either Right or Wrong, I am just saying, based on being a member of this Dermatology at Student Doctor for 3 years, I thought there was more of a help each other out sort of vibe going on here,

I can agree to some extent, If I didnt match and I found out about an open spot, I too would probably be somewhat adverse to posting information about it, but if I were to see other people posting about open spots, which I think people have done (i.e. circa Tufts 2008) then I would not be as adverse! If what is being implied serves as the standard, the cutthroatitude, then I would be even more adverse and probably not even consider posting it!

I guess I was at a point though that I was confident in my interviewing abilities and what I have to offer to not see other applicants as threats to my gaining acceptance.

This can serve as a wake up call for me I suppose...my bad!

I think the tufts and uci circa 2008 was posted on DIGA and dermboard by faculty first. I think when new spots open up they mostly already have people in mind, all they have to do is go down there rank list and find some that didn't match who they can fill it with. If i know of any open spots I'll let you know but then again I've already matched. The people that I know of who got derm from new spots opening up kept it pretty DL until they got it in writing that they got in.

IzzyMD, I guess the fellow you work with is a cutthroat jerk as well, as he/she certainly didn't post about the spot here.

Did you let him/her know what you think?

I returned from my three week holiday the day the interview was held for the THIRD spot at Indiana, so no he didn't tell me,

Why would he, I was not in the last application cycle, but if I was here when all of this went down, he would have told me, what would he have to worry about from me.

And N-surge, looks like you will have additional company at Indiana as they are trying to expand the residency program which for the good of everyone is a great thing

🙂

I wasn't sure if the Advanced spot had filled, or was going to fill.

This particular spot should have not been a mystery to those ranking programs for this Match. There was even a email sent out via myeras specifically regarding it. Perhaps it only went to those who interviewed there, which would make sense considering one ranks the programs one interviews at.
