I am contemplating opening a new path lab. Can anyone point me to suppliers who would lease or sell used processor, stainer, microtome station, etc. I want this to be as cheap as possible, I'd be going solo and don't want to sink too much $$$. Basic H&E histology, a few special stains... no immunos at least not in the beginning. Can anyone ballpark the amount of money it would take just to set up the shop? Thanks

Hard to believe there is a pathologist who doesn't know any of this.

What are you doing opening a pod lab?

I don't know where to shop for the cheapest deals, what financing options are out there, whether to own or lease, noone taught me how to set up a lab during residency. If you've done it, then please share your knowledge. No I don't want to buy brand new stuff from Leica.

I'm surprised your email isn't full of companies selling refurbished equipment. I literally delete these daily. There are a lot of companies out there with used equipment. All the consolidation and AP labs being shut down is probably putting even more used equipment on the market.

Why are they getting shut down if they're already consolidation labs? Did the volume get shifted back to hospitals, or was there a mass decline in the pt. population reducing demand?

Labcorp/quest have bought up and closed a lot of labs in the area, shifting the volume (that they actually manage to keep) to other regional labs they own. Meanwhile hospitals have been buying up other hospitals and closing AP/micro, sending the specimens to their large core lab. The number of AP/micro labs has dropped dramatically in my territory. The one I am at now probably will have the same fate when the hospital gets gobbled up. I am definitely glad I don't rely on this profession to pay the bills. My desire to network/kiss a** is gone and my chinese is rusty at best, so this will be my last job.

About the only new labs I have seen start up have been in-office labs.

So the consolidated satellite labs became re-consolidated...lol. I've also seen the bigger hospitals taking over smaller ones and centralizing AP as well. I wonder how much the financial prospects of starting an in-office lab have been affected over the past few years with the consolidations, AP lab closures, TC cuts, etc.

The few in-office labs around me seem to be doing fine. Once hospitals go full throttle into the insurance business, they will likely start dying off.

Then the used equipment market will be even more saturated. There is definitely plenty out there. We bought another used processor a few years ago. It's been a piece of crap though.

Got one of those emails from a company selling used equipment today. Mercedes Medical out of Sarasota florida is one of them that sends me these alot.
