Unfilled resins are those that have no silica or glass components. They are your basic monomer/polymer or powder/liquid acrylic resins used to make temporary crowns, denture bases or what not. Long ago, tooth colored acrylic resins were considered acceptable restorations for Cl III and V lesions.

Filled resins have been impregnated with silica to make them stronger and to give them wear resistance. They are also known as "dental composite resins"--silica/glass particles in an acrylic resin matrix. The finer its silica particles, the easier they were to polish. However, nothing beats a "matrix" finish as this was the best finish attainable with these materials. These materials are either mixed from two components to polymerize, or, a benzyl peroxide curing agent is added so it will cure with visible light.
